1985年当時小学一年生だった私は、日航機墜落事故に衝撃的な印象を持ってはいたが、不謹慎ながら歴史上のものと捉えていた感があった。しかし、著者の取材はそれを大きく覆した。誰にでもある日常を、何の前触れも無く、何の落ち度も無く、壊されていった人々の不条理さ無念さ、社会システムの度重なるヒューマンエラーの犠牲となった人々を思うと、本当にやりきれない気持ちでいっぱいになった。とても他人事には思えない。またさらに、『墜落の夏』は事故原因の真実を見つめるため、あらゆる角度からの検証を冷静に試みる。時間をかけて入念に誠意を持って行なった取材であるからこそ、社会システムへの提言に真実味が帯びてくるようである。初版から10年以上経つが、決して色褪せない良書であると思う。

日航機事故というひとつの事件を遺族、生存者、日航社員・・・など、さまざまな視点から声を集め書き切っている。筆者の綿密な取材ぶりが伺えるようだ。
しかし、最後の事故原因を究明しようと、飛行機の仕組みについて調べて書いてあるところは、やはり、専門外であるために苦しいところもある。だがそれも、素人にとっては視点が同じだけに分かりやすい。

JAL123便墜落事件について知りたくなったとき、スタート点としてまず最初に読む本として良いのではないだろうか。墜落までの経緯や原因追及について、また遺体回収と検死について、本事件について押さえておくべきではないかという事項をひととおりカバーしていると言えると思う。
墜落原因とその調査をめぐる問題について更に知りたくなったときは「隠された証言」、遺体回収・検死を巡るドラマについて更に知りたくなったときは「墜落遺体」など読むと良いでしょう。
