5.0 out of 5 stars 愛を求める狼の物語, 2002/6/11
　主人公はホワイト・ファング（白い牙）という狼と犬の混血です。当然、人間ではないのだから、描写は客観的なのですが、作者の筆の魔法でいつの間にかホワイト・ファングになったような気で思い入れたっぷりに読んでしまいます｡
　子供時代の哀しみから、最後に主人を見つけるまでの孤独などが、ひどく身につまされてしまいました｡狼の話なのに｡

　最後のほうは感動して泣けてきてしまいました｡
　生き物が信じられるような気になる、いい話です｡

動物文学という性格上、当然のことなのだが、ほとんどがセリフに頼らずに話を進めている。それでこんなに読ませるんだから、たいした筆力だ。描写にも展開にもダレがなく、引き締まった文体が着実にストーリーを綴る。野生、そして愛。ホワイト・ファングに四分の一の犬の血を引かせているというのも、まったくにくいほど行き届いた設定だ。本作品に横溢するむきだしの愛に心を打たれる。これが人間同士だと、嫌味や臭味が出て鼻につくところだが、そこは動物文学の利点を知り尽くしたジャック・ロンドン。すべて計算済み。人間への視点も容赦ない。これは動物文学、いや、文学のまぎれもなき傑作。

実は，この本を知人に薦められて，半年以上の間，手元で暖めてしまった。

何となく手が伸びなかった理由は二つの偏見がある。
ひとつは翻訳ものはどうしても読みにくくてちょっと抵抗があること。
もうひとつは動物文学は，大抵，ラストに登場する動物が死んでしまう
ものだと思いこんでいたこと。

しかし，実際に読んでみて，自分が大ばか者だったことを思いしらされた。

人間の心情でも難しいものを，狼の心情が手に取るように，
その情景が浮かんでくる。
母親に対して，未知なるものに対して，人間に対して。
まるで，狼がすぐそこにいて語りかけてくるかのように，
その心情が流れて入ってきた。

また，あとがきのなかで訳者の白石さんも書かれているように，
人間と狼の関連に見られる人間性や，狼の目を通してなされる人間への
辛辣極まる諷刺に，強く揺さぶられた。

いくつになって読んでも，人間性の幅を持たせることの出来る傑作だと
言えるだろう。
