ここまで来て…インマンの旅の終わり方が、あっけなかった。
時には辛すぎるほどの出会いや、出来事を乗り越え、同じ旅をしたかの
ように思わせるみごとな描写にもかかわらず、エイダの方はあっさり
した感じがします。
でも全体においてこの作品はすばらしく、まだ映画で観ていないので
楽しみではある。ここまでの繊細な心理描写は映像では無理でも、大地
を踏みしめて生きる部分はすごく楽しみにしています。

南北戦争の南軍側（ノースカロライナ）を舞台に、戦争で狂気に走る人々、戦争から逃れようとする人々、戦争を期に成長する人々。。。をとてもよく描いている。戦争から逃れて故郷へ戻るインマンと、戦争の混乱の中で生きのびつつ自分を見つめるエイダを細かく描写し続けて、それがパラレルに進む展開がすばらしい。切なさと逞しさが入り混じったこの展開は、映画よりも小説の方がずっと魅力的。

私にとって、必ずしも読みやすい本ではありませんでした。
エイダとローズの部分はわくわくし自分もそこにいて、当時の生活の智恵を学んでいるような気分だったのですが、インマンの旅の部分は彼の辛さがそのまま文章から感じられるのか、読み進むのがしんどく放り投げてしまいたくなることもありました。
残酷に感じる部分もありましたし。

ですが、読み終わってみると妙に心に残りました。

彼のことを忘れたわけではないけれど、生活がのしかかりそちらに意識が向いてしまっているエイダと、彼女を思う気持ちだけで辛い旅を乗り切ろうとしているインマン。
そのふたりの心の温度差のようなものと、実際に二人を隔てている距離。
そういうものがうまく表現されていました。

よく男性は別れた後もその女性を忘れられないと聞きますが、この小説を読むとなんとなくその気持ちも理解できたような気分になりました。
