藤沢 周平
1927‐1997。山形県生れ。山形師範卒業後、結核を発病。上京して五年間の闘病生活をおくる。’71(昭和46)年、「溟い海」でオール読物新人賞を、’73年、「暗殺の年輪」で直木賞を受賞。時代小説作家として、武家もの、市井ものから、歴史小説、伝記小説まで幅広く活躍。『白き瓶』(吉川英治賞)、『市塵』(芸術選奨文部大臣賞)など、作品多数(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

とても読みやすい時代小説だと思う。
短編集なので、通勤電車で読んでしまったが、余韻にひたれる状況で読みたい本だ。
上からの沙汰で、心情的には助けたい相手を切らなくてはいけない。
極秘のうちに・・・
仕事を終え、帰宅すると、朝帰りにたいそう立腹している妻が・・・

「恐妻の剣」は、サラリーマンなら誰しも、無意識に苦笑いをしてしまいそうである。

時代小説というと、小気味よい主人公とそれを支える美人、頼もしい子分格の若者、というのが思い浮かぶのだが、藤沢周平は違う。
もちろん、頼もしい健脚が主人公の小説もあるけれど、現代劇のサラリーマンのような、平凡な小心な小さな善人が迷いながら、今日より明日が幸せになりますように、と願う生き方を描いてくれると、「さすが藤沢周平！」と思う。

この「竹光始末」に書かれた6編の短編は、どれもそう。主人公は特別のヒーローではない。
それだけに人として、こんな風に生きたいという、等身大の魅力がある。

中でもいちばん魅力的なのは、「遠方より来る」の平九郎。
ぼくの好みかもしれないが、大言壮語はするわ、人を頼るわ、妙な自信を持っているわ、なんだか憎めない。
憎めないので、主人公の三崎甚平も、士官の口を探してくれる。

「食わせ物」なので、結局だめになるのだけれど、そのときの往生際が実に小気味よい。
人間、こうでなくっちゃ！

初出は昭和51年7月立風書房。藤沢ファンはご存じのように表題作『竹光始末』はあの山田洋次監督の『たそがれ清兵衛』の一部として使われていて、この映画をご覧になった方はなるほどあの部分に使われているのか、と読んでいて思われることだろう。

私見では昭和50年代の藤沢作品と昭和60年代から平成初めの藤沢作品ではカラーがかなり違うと思う。昭和50年代の作品は暗いままずっと続くが、昭和60年代から平成初めのものは暗い中に一筋の光が見え、そして明るさを随所に感じるものも多い。真の藤沢作品と言えるのは昭和60年代から平成初めの独特の明るさを持った頃だと僕は思う。

同じく私見では昭和50年代頃は長いサラリーマン生活から作家として独り立ちした頃で、何となくその頃の苦労を作風に引き摺っている気がする。『恐妻の剣』など読むと強くそう思う。共感はできるが昭和60年代から平成初めの頃の作品のような読後感がない。大作家にもそういう過程はあるということなのだろう。
