人間か火星人か、健常者か狂人か、ある日突然ラジオ放送作家の元に訪れた自称火星人のその男、そんな男のなんとも奇妙なキャラクターと話術の術中にハマり、読者もろとも主人公の正気に不純物でも流し込んだような形で、「あれ？」っという間にあるはずのないことが、あり得てきそうな不陰気を漂わす。たかだか１７０ページの会話文と処々の状況説明だけで、ここまで異次元を描けちゃう安部氏は、日常どんなのこと考えながら生活していたのかと強い疑問を起こさせます。ちなみにあの調子であと２冊ぐらい続編を書かれていたら、読み終えて正気を保っていられるか自信薄いです（ちょっと大げさか...）。登場人物わずか４人、その他電話の声のみで登場する男が一人。そして基本的に回想以外のシーンは全てマンションかアパートのような所の一室にのみ限定されている。またいかにもSF的な化学薬品や奇妙なマシンの登場もなく、単に話術のみで強烈にSFの高みに達してしまうとは、いやはやホンモノの達人です。この小説もそうだが、安部公房という人自体が、何に対しても何処まで本気なのか、真剣なのか、まったく解せず、その存在その物が殆どアートです。

この作品の初版(早川書房)は、は1967年に出版された。新潮文庫からは出版されたのは、1976年である。私は、この文庫版によってほぼリアルタイムで読んだ。同1976年、安部氏の創作から9年遅れで、哲学者のクリプキは、後に「ウィトゲンシュタインのパラドックス」という著書で有名になる元講演「規則と私的言語についてのウィトゲンシュタインの説」を行っている。実は、安部の本作品とクリプキ講演の両者は、驚くほどに深くシンクロしているのだ。だが私には、どう見ても安部の本作品の方がエレガントに見える。

設定上この作品はSF的要素があるが、決してこれはSFなどではない、
というメッセージに安部公房という作家の哲学が表れている。

この作品ははじめは面白おかしく展開していく。中盤もそれほどテンポは変わらない。
しかし、最後の最後で、ドンッと突き落とされたような感覚に陥る。

安部公房の作品を読んでいると、まだかまだかと突き落とされるのを

楽しみにしている自分がいることに気づく。
この作品でも勢いよく突き落としてくれました、ドンッと。
