作者が絶滅したといわれる生物や、現在その危機にある生物の生息地や、保護などの専門家を尋ねて歩く内容です。一つについて深く追求するのではなく、数種類について概要などを説明していく内容なので、重たくも無く、飽きる事無く読む事が出来ます。

難しい言葉を使わずに、その生物の数が減少した理由を説明しているので、ちょっと興味があるくらいの人でも容易に理解できます。
また、それぞれの生物のエピソードや生息地辺りの地域の様子なども伺えるので、動物保護の立場のみならず、一つの読本として楽しめる内容になっています。

　著者は知床の伐採反対運動にも関わった環境保護運動家で、本書にも強烈な役所・土建・林道批判が込められている。
　ニホンカワウソ、コウノトリ、ジュゴンなど18の動物が取り上げられ、彼等が絶滅の危機に瀕するようになった原因が厳しく追及される。すなわちそれは、不要なダム、林道、護岸工事などのせいである。利権だけのために開発が行われ、環境破壊の実態は誤魔化され隠蔽される。いかに日本の行政が腐敗しているか、痛烈に糾弾されている。
　意外に知られていないアマミノクロウサギやヤマドリの実態も明らかになって興味深いが、各章は短く、物足りなさを感じる。
　ウケクチウグイ、ウシモツゴなど地味な動物も登場して面白い。
