1892年、ロンドンが16才の時から過ごした数年間のホーボー(列車に只乗りして国中を廻る放浪者)生活の様子を綴ったもの。今で言うロードムーヴィーの御先祖様みたいなものだが、ホーボーの生活を描いた小説はこれが初めてだったらしい。一文無しの身ひとつで列車に乗り込み、制動手達や警官達と執拗な追いつ追われつを繰り広げ、口先三寸で何とか飯にありつき、刑務所内部の有無を言わせぬ権力機構に何とか順応し、ホーボー仲間と交流し、或いは競い、はたまた出し抜き、世の様々な残酷さに直面して憤り、或いは怯え、機転と勇気で果てることのない気儘な日々を明日へと繋げてゆく………「最高の放浪者」のひとりとして、反社会的と云うよりは没社会的な智恵で過酷な状況を明るく生き抜くその姿は、正しくアメリカの文化英雄と呼ぶに相応しい。

この「地球人ライブラリー」のシリーズは大体同じ作りになっているのだが、地図、当時の社会情勢についての幾つかのコラム、巻末に参考文献リスト、そして各ページ毎に地理風俗等についてのやたら詳しい註がどっさり付いていて、それなりに労作である。唯惜しむらくは、註の大半が百科事典からその儘抜き書きしてきた様なもので、行間を埋めてくれる様な類いのものが少なかったこと。勉強にはなるが、それで読書の楽しみが増すとは限らない。

「荒野の呼び声」「白い牙」の著者がこんな滅っ茶苦茶な生活を送っていたとは！！
どうりで前述のような彼の作品（そしてこの作品も）が強烈な生命力にあふれているわけだ･･･と勝手に納得。

食べ物にありつくためにホラやハッタリをかましまくる姿に、なんといい加減な･･･とあきれるやら感心するやら･･･、一方で実体験からのみで養った現実を見る正確で鋭い視点に魅了されました。

「･･･人間と他の動物の大きな違いは、人間は女性を虐待する唯一の動物であると。･･･狼も臆病なコヨーテさえも、･･･人間に飼われて退化した犬でさえそんなことはしない。犬はまだこの点では野生の本能を保持している。一方、人間は野生の本能を失ってしまった。･･･」

別に誰の味方をするではなく、ただただ経験から学んだ客観的な彼の考察を読む度に、メディアやネットを通じて取り込んだ（つもりになっている）自分の感性が、いかにひ弱で根拠のないものか、他人の受け売りであるかを痛感させられます。
