　この本を読んで、霊界をも含めて古来の日本と日本人をこれほど深く理解し愛した外国人がいただろうか、と思う。工藤さんは、そうなった要素を三つ指摘する。すなわち、「アメリカ人としての常識、文化、教養」、セツをはじめとした家族、そして14年５ヶ月の日本での生活における「七割くらいの幸せと三割くらいの不幸の調合」。

この本を読んで、発展が頭打ちの日本がこの100年余りに失ったものの大きさを思う方は多いのではないか。また、細かなことかも知れないが、日本でのハーンが淋しさを漂わせている、と私は思う。それに関し工藤さんは、「ハーンは無意識に横浜で自分の過去を清算していたのかも知れない。」という。

こんな風に、この本を読んで、日本におけるハーンを工藤さんの生き生きした描写を通じてたどることができ、楽しい時をもつことができる。

しかし、工藤さんのハーン３部作（この本はその最後）を通して読んではじめて得られることも多い。例えば、ハーンの生涯を貫く「心の痛みと、それ故のやさしさ」。また、ハーンにはどこにいても心の支えになる女性がいたこと、すなわち、ヨーロッパでの母親ローザ、アメリカ以後のエリザベス・ビスランド、日本におけるセツ。つまり、女性の地位はともかくとして女性の役割が国や時を越えて大きいことの一端か。さらには、ハーンが当時としては桁違いにグローバルな人間だったこと、等々。日常にかまけていては考えにくい多事を楽しみながら考えさせられてしまった。没後100年を機にハーンのおもだった作品と、できれば工藤さんのハーン３部作を通してお読みになることをお薦めします。
