　工藤さんは、この本で、ラフカディオ・ハーンの生涯のうちアメリカ時代を中心に評し、特に、エリザベス・ビスランドとハーンの交流に強く光をあてている。彼女は、工藤さんによれば、「南部の知性」「上流社会のキャリアウーマン」である。ハーンのシンシナティにおける苦しい時期に良き理解者だっただけでなく、ふたりの間には、ニューオリンズの時代から日本時代を通して心の交流が続く。そして、ハーンの死後、ビスランドは『ラフカディオ・ハーン　その生涯と書簡』を世に送り出すことによって、ふたたびハーンに生命を吹き込んだ。ふたりの心の交流は、表紙の図柄にあるハーンの肖像とビスランドのシルエットとに象徴的に表現されるようにハーンの生と業績に影のようについて離れない。

　工藤さんは、ゆかりの地や人を現地に訪ね、その時の風景の印象や会話などをちりばめつつ、書籍・資料から得た情報を紡ぎ上げ、ハーンのアメリカ時代を再現する。そして、ハーンの魅力を、「心の痛みと、それ故のやさしさが、強く私たちを感動させる（あとがき）」ところにあるとしている。

　なお、工藤さんによる『ラフカディオ・ハーンの生涯』は、このほかにヨーロッパ編と日本編があって、それら全体でハーンの世界を構築してくれる。もうひとつ、アメリカ時代の後半に包含されるマルティニーク時代は、本書から除かれているが、別に『マルティニーク熱帯紀行』として、少し色合いの違った本にまとめられている。旅好きの私にとってはこのマルティニーク紀行もおもしろかったが、工藤さんのハーンには確かに「心の痛みと、それ故のやさしさ」をともなう旅人の姿が一貫して見えてくる。
