ポオ唯一の長篇と言われる『ナンタケット島出身のアーサー・ゴードン・ピムの物語』には、彼の崇拝者達によって書かれた「続編」が幾つか存在する。ラヴクラフトの『狂気の山脈にて』が一番の有名どころだろうが、本書もまたそのひとつだし、珍しいところではルディー・ラッカーの『空洞地球』なんてのもある。ラッカーのものはパロディ色と云うかスチームパンク色の強いもので、同一の世界観上に纏めるにはどうも抵抗があるのだが、『狂気の―』の方は『ピム』の深秘的な側面を更に掘り下げ、あの謎めいた南極大陸の描写を、宇宙的な悽愴感を持つ超歴史の織物の中に編み入れた。ヴェルヌの手になる本書は、ラヴクラフトとは逆に、ポオの冷徹な科学的な眼差しの方に注目した作品。

　物語としては、謎めいた終わり方をしたポオの『ピム』が、実は小説などではなく実際にあったことの記録である、と云う前提から出発して、遭難したピム達を探しに出た捜索隊一行の必死の南極行を描いたものなのだが、登場人物が割と多く、極限状況に於ける人間ドラマとして航海記は展開してゆく。海洋冒険ものとしてはヴェルヌ作品の例に漏れず、中々の出来。

　只賛否が分かれると思われるのは、その過程で『ピム』の手記にあった不可解な記述の部分に解明の光が当てられ、御丁寧にも超自然的現象かとも見えた部分に対して科学的に納得のいく様な「タネ明かし」が為されていると云う点。神秘の裏側を探る物語自体は珍しくも何ともないのだが、ポオの原作自体が評価の大きく分かれた作品だけに、この点についてのファンの見解は難しいところだろう。とにかく、良くも悪くもヴェルヌ的と云うかフランス的と云うか19世紀的と云うか、『カルパチアの城』等と並んで、彼の輝かしい科学志向とその想像力の限界がはっきり表れている作品だと言える。

　因みに、或る箇所の註でちょっとだけネモ船長のことが触れられている。彼のファンだと云う方は要チェック。

あいかわらずの超長編作って感じで、何だか少し読みずらさを感じた。この人の作品は全体的に海洋アドベンチャー要素が強い作品がおおいから、専門用語が多く出すぎてると思うな。そのせいで、少しとっつきにくい文章が目立つ。超昔の作品だから仕方ないだろうが、もう少し簡略化な文体で語ってもらいたいな。
