前半部分は浮揚するインド人に重点が置かれている。正直ウンザリする内容になっていてつまらない。しかし、後半部分はインドの面白味が伝わる内容になっていて楽しめる。ただ、わかりやすい文章ではあるが、句読点が少ないので読み難い。20年前のインドについて書かれた本だが、あまり変わっていないなぁと思う部分もあり、懐かしい気分になった。また、インドに行きたくなった。

2.0 out of 5 stars なんの知識もなくインドにいった椎名誠, 2005/10/9
妹尾河童さんの「河童が覗いたインド」が這いずり取材の体験記だとすれば、この本はインドの表層だけをなめた本である。一流のホテルに宿泊し、男3人が日本語の通訳付で観光地を回っているにすぎない。あまり時間をかけて読む本ではない。タージマハルはムガール帝国の王様が自分の王妃のために作ったお墓であるというような知識を現地で知るレベルの体当たり本。ただ、この本で関心するのは、椎名誠の感性。「ミクロネシアの島々では、イントロがあって、だんだんと暑くなっていくのに対し、インドではイントロなしに最初から勝負に入る。夜が明けるのと同時にすでにどおーんと暑いのである。」なんてところは、インドの暑さが皮膚感覚としてよく伝わる。この感性でこの本はもっている。写真が豊富なのもこの価格では嬉しい。

この蒸し暑い中、発作的にインドを旅したくなった。暑いときに暑いところへ行くのが旅の王道ではないか、と。それをやってのけたのがこの本。４６度の炎熱地獄のかの地は、椎名氏のフィルターを通すとごく庶民的で生のバイタリティにあふれた等身大の国であった。

学生の頃、藤原新也の「印度放浪」にしびれた。しかし今は辛気臭くて受け付けない。作家も自分も妙に哲学ぶって、インドという国を崇高で何か特別な国としてとらえていた気がする。その点椎名氏は、見たこと聞いたこと感じたことを変にこねくり回すことなく、例の語りで、まさに「そっくりそのまま」あっさり文章にしている。

インドという国に親近感を与える一冊だと思う。人間（老若男女）にフォーカスをあてた写真もいい。
