林 将之
1976年山口県田布施町生まれ。神奈川県秦野市在住。樹木ライター・編集者・デザイナー。造園設計を学んでいた学生時代、既存の樹木図鑑がわかりにくいことに疑問を抱き、葉で木の名前を調べる方法を独学し、葉を直接スキャナーでとり込む撮影方法を確立。木や自然を初心者にもわかりやすく伝えることをテーマに、全国の森を渡り歩きつつ、執筆、森林整備・調査、環境教育などの活動にとり組んでいる。2000年にホームページ『樹木鑑定サイトこのきなんのき』を開設(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

この本は、街路樹、公園、庭園等に普通に見られる樹木約140種に掲載種を限定して、葉のスキャナー写真を載せ、見分けのポイントを丁寧に示してくれる本です。葉をスキャナーでスキャンし、そのデジタル映像を図鑑にするというのは、著者の林将之氏が独自に開発した手法。スキャン写真も大型できれいですし、見分けのポイント解説、若木と老木の樹皮の写真も載っていて、読んでいてあきません。著者が前書きで述べている通り、身近な樹木の9割はこの本でわかるのではないかと思います。検索の方法についてもちゃんと書かれていますし、巻末に索引も載っていますのでこの点もgoodです。
個人的には、今まで他の植物図鑑で言葉でしか理解できていなかったツブラジイとスダジイの違い、モチノキとクロガネモチの違いなどがわかりやすかったと思いました。
また、この本では、各樹木の用途等についても説明があるのですが、それについては、前書きの部分で、そのようにした「動機」が書かれていて、著者の植物、ひいては環境に対する真摯な姿勢が伝わってき、好感が持てます。
身近な樹木に対して、「はて、いつも見ている木だが、何だろう? 他の木との違いは?」等と思い始め方に、まずお勧めします。横15cm, 縦21cm, 厚さ1.2cm, 重さ約320g、全175ページと、若干携帯には大きめですが、重さは苦になりません。もちろん、すでに植物好きの方にも一度目を通されることをお勧めいたします。掲載樹種を限定しているだけに、わかりやすさは抜群です。
これを大体頭に入れたら、次は、林氏著「葉で見わける樹木」(小学館)をごらんになられると、もっといろいろな種の見分け方について理解が深められると思います。
初心者向け樹木ガイドとして大変お勧めできる本です。総合的に見て5つ星としたいと思います。

身近にある植物の名前を判断するのに葉の形と樹皮・樹形から判断しやすいように実物大の写真が掲載されているのは大変分かりやすく親しみ易かったです。専門的で詳しい説明が無いのが逆に見ていて疲れさせず、単純に名前を知りたい場合などには最適だと思います。植えられている場所の具体例は千差万別の為、あまり参考に出来ないかもしれませんが、その辺りは自分の経験で覚えるしかないと思っています。葉の形で体系的に分けてる所がいいです。欲を言えばもう少し掲載種類が多く欲しかったです。１枚１枚スキャナで取り込んでの製本という事ですので限界もあったかと思います。今後の増版を期待したいです。実際の木では条件によって葉の大きさも大小しますし、虫食いで完全な形が分からなかったりするので経験が必要です。
