Book Description

This is an adaptation from the fictionalized biography of "sword saint" Miyamoto Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. In Japan, a new government has taken power and the land is in disarray. Amidst the turmoil, a young man sets out on a journey seeking spiritual enlightenment by the sword, prepared to slay anyone who gets in his way. Though strong and adept, Takezo is on the losing side of the battle of Sekigahara. Seeking refuge with a beautiful woman and her daughter, Takezo and his sidekick Matahachi must defend the women from the bandit leader Tsujikaze Tenma.

待ってましたと云わんばかりのこの作品。
井上氏の独特の世界観が見事に宮本武蔵の世界にマッチしていて、
まさに人間の肉体美。本当に美しく、その妖艶さに見惚れるほど・・・
文字は少なく、画集のような感じもまた良し。
歴史の勉強になるかどうかは別として、日本人なら是非読んで欲しい！

いまでこそ3500万部突破などという驚異的な売れ方をしていますが、発売当初に井上雄彦さんが、「宮本武蔵」を題材にあげることの意味がわからないという疑問が大方でした。『スラムダンク』であれだけの熱狂を起こし充電期間を経た後だったからよけいです。

でも、こうして既刊を読み通してみると、その意図がよくわかる。武蔵の時代は関が原が終わり、徳川統治３００年の退屈な日常が訪れる、かつ戦国時代という下克上の秩序が急速に失われていく日本社会の大転換期です。いままでの常識が通じなくなり、政権の移動などダイナミックの歴史の波は停滞します。織田信長や豊臣秀吉などの個人が武勲を立ててヒーローになる時代は終わりを告げようとしていました。そういう退屈な日常の世界は、たけぞうのようなアウトサイダーにとっては、窮屈で生きにくい時代でしょう。そんな時代の中で、「自分」というものの方向性や居場所が不明確で混乱している彼は、生きるのが苦しくてしかたがない。戦争がないから社会も彼を必要としてくれない。はたして彼が生きていく意味と価値はあるのか？。武蔵は、旅と剣を通して、自分の人格を確立していく「道」を求めるようになります。これは正統なビルドゥングスロマンであり、かつそれ実践した歴史上の人物がいるというリアル感も、すごいものがある。いまの時代の退屈さの中で、社会規模ではなく個人が解放と自分の居場所を見つけるために、あがくたけぞうの姿を描くことは、強い共感を得ることは必定だと思うのです。この時代の武芸者やかぶきものたちは、すでに社会のヒーローとなることよりも個人の人格の充実を優先している節があります。柳生にせよその他の放浪者にせよ。たぶん、ほんの２０年前の戦国期ではありえないことでしょう。終わらない日常で、人格を充実して生きるすべが描かれているような気がします。

物語にも絵にも惹きこまれた
生きるとはなにか　強いとは何か　がテーマかな？

武蔵に対する知識は世間一般レベルだった井上雄彦さん
それがなぜ武蔵を書きたくなったのか？

スラムダンクの連載を終えてからＮＢＡの取材などで
海外に行くことが多くなった井上さん
自分が日本人であることを意識し
いかに自分が日本を知らないかに気付く
日本の先人達に対して考えていかないと
いけないのではと言う危機感が芽生えた

そんなとき　たまたま次の作品の参考にと
薦められた吉川英治の宮本武蔵を読んでいるうちに
素直に書きたいなと言う思いが出てきた
