時代に翻弄されながらも、気高くわが道を往く篤姫の姿を描いた下巻。上巻に続いて、夫（徳川家定）や義父（島津斉彬）の死、幕末の動乱、和宮との確執と和解、徳川家再興等々、波乱に満ちたその日々が流麗な筆捌きで描かれる。（江戸城大奥からみた定点幕末史という意味でも、多くのことを学んだ。）それにしても、男性的視点から描かれることの多い幕末期にこのような女性がいたとは。島津家分家の娘から御台所（御台様）へというその数奇な生涯は、正にこの時期の日本の地殻変動（社会変動）を象徴する出来事でもあるようにも思われてならない。

篤姫といえば和宮さまをいじめた怖い姑というイメージだったが、
本当にそうだったのかという疑問が生じた。
作者がこの小説を書いたきっかけは、そのようなことだったとのこと。
下巻では、いよいよ、この和宮の降嫁以後が描かれます。
怖い姑といっても、篤姫が和宮の義理の姑になったのは、
なんとまだ26歳のこと。
ちなみに、嫁いだ将軍が死に寡婦となったのが22歳。
小説の中では、ついにバージンのまま寡婦となったとされています。
そのため、若い嫁に対する女性としての嫉妬の感情なども描かれ、
そのあたりの描写がとても興味深かったです。
他方で、大奥に仕える女性の多くは「生涯不犯」を掟とされ、
それなのに将軍のお渡りの際には寝室に不眠で控えなければならず、
女として苦しみに耐えねばならなかったといった描写があり、
ここでも女性ならではの感覚と描写の巧みさが光っていました。

徳川幕府崩壊後、篤姫はある意味大奥から開放され自由の身となり、
和宮ともむしろよい関係を築きます。
そこに大きな救いがあり、読後感はさわやかなものがありました。

初版を持っていますが、ボロボロになってしまったので新装版を購入しました。もし天璋院さんより強い現代女性はいるかと問われたら私は首を横に振るでしょう。『女は嫁いだ家が即ち死に場所』の言葉通り、腹を括り嫁ぎ先の人間として生き死ぬことができるだろうか。私には正直無理なことだ。私には無いこの潔さが彼女の強さと感じました。激動の時代を生きた彼女に敬意を表します。そして、初版本2冊と新装版の2冊は一生の宝です。
