理科・社会につづくお勉強エッセイシリーズ。
世に少なくない算数ギライの顔色をうかがいつつなんとか算数で話をしようとするシミズ博士、今回は敢闘賞というところでしょうか。
私自身はどちらかというと算数・数学が得意とまで行かなくともおもしろいと思っているタイプなので、その腰の引け加減も含め、じゅうぶんに楽しみました。でも、算数が好きじゃないなと思っている人をこの本で啓蒙するのはやはりちょっとキビシイかも。
サイバラ嬢のイラストのほとんどが、ちっとも中身への「挿し絵」になっていないあたりも、今回のエッセイのキビシサをかたっているようで、それはそれでまたオモシロイのですが。
算数を憎んではいないけど、もうちょっと気楽にお近づきになれないかな、と思っている人にはよさそうです。
とくに「掛け算の価値、割り算の意味」は挫折しかけている現役小学生（をもつお父さんお母さん）にもきっと役に立ちます。

3年間塾で数学と理科の講師のバイトをしていて、数学や算数の本は100冊以上読んできましたが、その中で一番わかりやすく書いてあった本だと思います。就職活動で数学の苦手な後輩に薦めましたが、まるで算数がだめな後輩でも最後まで楽しく読めたそうです。数学の苦手な人にも得意な人にもいい本だと思います。

算数と聞いただけで嫌悪感を示す人が多い。著者が指摘するように、、その理由としては分数の割り算であったり、鶴と亀の足の数を足すといった文章問題の実用に程遠い無意味さであったりする。
それを何とか面白く、いろいろな事例や矛盾を交えてくれていた。挿絵を描くサイバラとのやりとりも面白い。
私は一応理系だからそのように感じたが、「算数と聞いただけで虫酸が走る」ひとは、著者があとがきに書いているように、第4章から読むのがよいだろう。
