　最初は心臓が右側にある人の異常はなぜなのかから始まって、生物を構成するのはなぜL-アミノ酸（アミノ酸にもD型とL型という全く対照的な構造がある）ばかりなのか。
　それから、人間の左脳がなぜ言語をつかさどるのか｡
　さらには、なぜほとんど（９０％くらい）のヒトは右利きなのか。

　という一見無関係に思える「非対称」の事例を次から次へと科学的に分析し、最後にそれらはすべて宇宙を構成する物理学の法則からきているのだという展開は、見事としかいいようがない｡

ヒトは対称的なものに美を感じる。
しかし心臓は左にあるし、脳は左右の半球で機能が異なり、アミノ酸はL体、糖はD体である。こういった非対称の事例を科学的に解説し、非対称の成り立ちを解明していく。

またヒトはマイナリティーを異端とする。
多くの人が右利きである理由を検証し、仮説を設ける。左利きが差別されてきた事例も多く述べられている。右が正統であり、左が邪道とされる宗教的・言語的事例も多い。

生物学、化学、心理学、言語学、考古学などさまざまな分野にまたがった非対称に関する知識が詰め込まれている。私自身、左利きのため、特に面白く読めた。

　左右についての随筆。この形式はブルーバックスでは珍しいのだが、この著者の博識さには圧倒される。生物学、科学、物理学、文学(英文学からロシア文学まで!!）、心理学、社会学、歴史、語学・・・ここまで広い領域をここまでハイレベルに語れる人は大変難しい（一般的に教養は、文系の「シェークスピアを読んだ事があるか？」と理系の「熱力学の第二法則を説明できるか」が同じレベルだといわれているが、これを両方yesと言える人はほぼ皆無らしい。この著者は共に出来るわけだ）
　ひたすら利益を追求するアメリカとは違った、博物学のさかんなイギリス人ならではの良書と言えよう。日本人は教養を蔑視する傾向が世界的に見ても強いのだが、この様な幅広い教養を身につけることこそが国際人への第一歩と言えるのではないだろうか?わが身を内省するためにも読みたい一冊。
