私が小説を読み始めた数年前の高校生の頃、まだ小説は難しく堅苦しいものだとして私の前にあった。
何かの弾みでこの本を手に取り、読み終えて本を閉じた時、目の前がクラクラと揺れた。
「あんた、小説舐めてんじゃない？」と言われた気がした。
難しい、と言われれば、確かにこの作品は難解に過ぎる。だが一方で、なんとも鮮烈な感動と印象を与える。小説というものの価値観を変えさせれくれた、大切な一冊。
何か面白いもの無い？と聞かれれば、未だにこれを薦めています。

本作は群像新人長編小説賞優秀作、
現在にいたるまでなお、作者の代表作であろう。

まともに解読しようとすれば、ふざけているとしか思えない
このポップでシュールな詩的世界を
どのようなコトバで評価すればいいのか迷うところだ。

物語としては破綻していながら、
「わたし」とキャラウェイの死の挿話は
何度読んでも涙が零れる。
何処から掬い取れたのか判らない
キラキラとした叙情性漂う佳作である。

はじめて読んだとき、すごくせつなくなって
でもどうしてなのか全然説明できなくて
何度も何度も読み返してみた

そしてやっぱりわからなくて、でも大好きで
それが何故なのかどうしでも知りたくて
著者の作品をどんどん読んでしまいました
