　著者は酒と渓流魚をこよなく愛し、両者を求めて全国を訪れているという。
　本書で取り上げられているのは、各務原の天河、福岡の飛龍、御坊の紀州美人、名張の瀧自慢など。実際に酒蔵を訪れ、蔵主や杜氏の話を聞き、試飲している。どの蔵も小さいけれど、活気と意気込みが伝わってくる。
　ただ、なんとなくうつろな本であった。蔵の歴史や土地の風土、水の質、杜氏の人柄などは良く伝わってくるのだが、酒そのものの姿がもうひとつ見えてこない。文章が上滑りななってしまっているのと、酒の美味さを的確に表現する力に欠けるからだろう。
　後半は酒ではなく、炭づくりや魚醤について。いかなごしょうゆ、しょっつる、いしりと日本の三大魚醤が取材されており、興味深かった。
