著者は、大学教員などを経て現在はフリーランス語学教師。これまでも、専門領域のロシア語関係の他、外国語を学ぶことに関する著書を数々出している。
本書は「外国語を学ぶ」ということがどういうことなのかを根本から考えて(実はそんなに難しいことではなく、ある意味で常識的なこと)読者に示している。語り口は著者の他書と同様、軽妙で人を飽きさせないが、真実の中心から外れることは滅多にない。大変な筆力だ。
外国語(著者は語学という方を好むようだが)を学ぶことに関して、楽しく学ぶということと、プロとして必要とされることが何かということをきちんと区別して書いているのは妥当である。プロとして必要なことについてはかなり厳しい見方をしているのに対して、楽しく学ぶことについては手を変え品を変え、興味を持って学び続けることが大事だということを読者に示している。語学教師のプロとしての経験が見事に結実している。
外国語を学ぶに当たってのさまざまなポイントがあげられている。例えば、「語学は時間がかかる」ということでは、「『あっと言う間』に上達すること・・・を謳っている語学書とか会話学校は、はっきりいって欺いている。」と、当然なことを述べている。それほど、おかしな学習法が世の中に氾濫していることは、プロとして看過できないのだろう。
分かりやすい文章の中に外国語学習の本質が述べられている。どんな外国語を勉強するにしても読んでおくと迷わないし、励みにもなる。

新聞広告を読むと面白そうですが，あまり深みはありません。ある程度語学学習をした事のある人ならば，予想の範囲内ではないでしょうか。
語学を学ぶ，あるいは楽しむ一般的な「心構え」についての本であって，語学の上達に実用的に役立つと思って読むべきではないでしょう。要するに気楽な語学エッセイと言ったところですが，それほど新しい話題があるわけでもなく，後半は冗漫な感じを受けます。
第三章の「語学の常識を疑う」が白眉で，多くの人が「やっぱりそうか！」と安心感を味えると思います。

「やりなおし英語」みたいな、チャチなノウハウ本が世の中に溢れている（もし本当にそんな題名の本があったら、申し訳ない）。私も、ついついそんな本を買い込んではすぐに放り出してしまうのだが、この本は中身と題名が一致していない。　多分、編集者の命名だろう。

私は黒田センセイの本を、専門書以外は全部読み尽くしてしまったので、さっき書店でこの新刊書を見つけて、中身も見ずに早速購入してきた。

やけに軽い調子の前書きには鼻白んだが、程なくこの著者独特の惚けたクールな文体に（いつものように）すっかり引き込まれてしまい、気がついてみれば『英語以外の外国語が、面白そうだな』という結論（罠！）に導かれているのだ。

この本には（英語も含めて）外国語をモノにするヒントが、著者の体験を通じて沢山書かれている。　多分、いま学校で義務として英語や第二外国語を勉強している若い人よりも、自分で語学学習の苦い挫折とほんの少々の成功を経験した中高年のほうが同感し、納得し、ヒントを有効に活用できるだろう。
