　ほぼ同じタイトルの、五十嵐貴久の『Ｆａｋｅ』の直後に読んだので、つい比べてしまうのだけれど、読後感の爽やかさという点で、本作の方がずっと上だろう。あくまで私の個人的な好みだけどね。

　この小説が面白いのは、やはり一つずつの場面の、細部に確かなリアリティがあるからだろう。フィクションは、やはり細部の魅力の積み重ねで初めて全体が輝くのだと思う。
　夜の銀座を舞台に、登場人物たちの欲望とだまし合いが渦を巻き、周到な伏線の末に、クライマックスへなだれ込む展開は快感。善人が出てこない（主人公が凡人だけど一番まとも？）作品なのに、不快な感じは全くない。

　内容的には、厳密に言うとコンゲーム小説とはちょっと違うようにも思う。クライマックスの大仕掛けの所では、必ずしも敵を「だます」わけじゃないしね。この作品の快感は、物語の中の材料できちんと世界が構築され、なるほどと納得できる決着になっていることにあるのだろう。ラストがやや小さくまとまりすぎた印象はあるけどね。

　夜の銀座の内幕を描いた部分も、確かにリアルで非常に面白いが、この小説に描かれているのは、水商売の一端のそのまた一端くらいに過ぎないと思う。だから、その意味の「情報小説」として称賛するようなほめ方は、ちょっと筋違いかな、という気がする。
　単純に、娯楽作としてすごく面白い。それがこの小説に一番ふさわしいほめ言葉だろう。

私はこの作品で楡周平を発見しました。
正直期待していませんでしたが、本作は私としては☆3.5個の評価です。
あまり作数がないのですが、本作を読むと著者の次の作品を探してしまうことは間違いないと思いますよ。

うだつの上がらない銀座のクラブのウェイターが主人公で、大金を落としていく客を数人つないでいるカリスマホステスと知り合ったり、友人がサラ金地獄に陥ってそれを助けたりするうちに大変な事件に巻き込まれていくというストーリー。全体を通じて「虚像」「虚栄」といった言葉で表される世界を描写しており、後から考えると「フェイク」という題名もよく考えたなという感じ。まあ作者独特のスピード感があるので読んでいて飽きないのだが、どうもストーリーラインが安直で平板な印象は否めない。一連の楡小説の中では中の下か。
