フィツジェラルドと言えば、先ず「グレート・ギャツビー」と言う名が思い浮かぶのですが、この短編集はそれからすると、かなり趣を異にしています。
たまたま「ベンジャミン・バトン−数奇な人生−」の映画化を機に、今回この短編集が出版されたのでしょう。

ここに取り上げられているのは、
「ベンジャミン・バトン−数奇な人生−」
「レイモンドの謎」
「モコモコの朝」
「最後の美女」
「ダンス・パーティの惨劇」
「異邦人」
「家具工房の外で」の７作品で、
ジャンル的には、ミステリー、ファンタジー、ＳＦぽいものなど様々ですが、ストーリー・テラーとしてエンターテイメントに徹したものです。

そうは言っても、その内容には「グレート・ギャツビー」の香りがしますし、夫婦或いは男女の微妙な関係を扱ったものも多くあります。

個人的には、「異邦人」の微妙なラストを含んだ夫婦を扱った物語が気に入りました。
ただ、やはり「グレート・ギャツビー」の圧倒的印象が強く、なかなか入り込めなかったのも事実です。
作者の別の面を見るのだと言う意志の元で読むべきかも知れません。

映画公開前に、原作を知りたくて購入しました。フィッツジェラルドの短篇集で、表題作ベンジャミン・バトンの一生を、60ページ足らずで記しています。少し物足りなさを感じましたか、反対に3時間弱の映画はどのように表現されているのか、楽しみです。

この文庫はベンジャミンバトンと他の合わせて７つの短編集である。

ここにのっているベンジャミンバトンは映画「ベンジャミンバトン　数奇な人生」とは

大幅に違う。

ネタばれ注意

一つめ　父がベンジャミンを捨てない
二つ目　映画では生まれたとき体は老人、心は赤ん坊だったが
　　　　この本のベンジャミンは心も老人からである
三つめ　映画は主に恋愛を中心にしてある
このほかにも違う点はいっぱいある。

まぁ映画が違うのだが
だから全く違うといっても過言ではない。
ただ一つの共通点は数奇で切ない人生であることだ。

また短編なので映画の方が逆に長いのである。
しかしコンセプトとして、小説版として

面白い部分は多々あるので読んでみるといいかも。
