「小泉八雲」。恥ずかしながら、彼の作品は「KWAIDAN（怪談）」を読んだ記憶しかなかった。
あるキッカケで、彼が作家として遺した数々の他作を読み始めた。それらの中で、この「日本の面影」が、群を抜き、新鮮で感慨深く印象に残った。
冒頭の「東洋の第一日目」から、いきなり、彼自身が見た『東洋の小さな幻想の世界』に、自分も一緒に入り込んだような不思議な感覚になった。彼の美しい描写文体、訳者の絶妙な翻訳、すばらしく新鮮で、また幻想的で、当時の美しい日本を見る事が出来たような気分になった。
大人になってから、何かの折りに日本文化・風景の美しさを感じる事の多い方には是非お勧めしたい。特に、読書を映像でイメージしながら読む方には「文字を読む」のみではなく、ご自身なりの幻想的な時間を過ごせるだろうと想像する。外国生活の経験を通して日本文化・情緒を再認識したという方々にも勧めたい。

すっかり近代化してしまった平成の世の日本人の視点は欧米化してしまい、小泉八雲の視点と重なる面が多い。
西洋文明を野蛮と指摘する彼の言葉は、単なる日本贔屓とは言い切れず、きわめて現代的問題を提起している。

彼の見聞した事物は、当時の日本人なら不思議でも何でもない事であるが、現代人は八雲と同じように、日本の神秘に触れることができる。
日本人が当時の日本にオリエンタリズムを感じてしまうのである。
それは、日本は近代化によって得たものより喪失したものの方が大きいのではという問を突きつている。

八雲自身、近代化に突き進む日本に危惧を示している。因みに、漱石も欧米の近代合理主義の過大評価に疑問を呈していたのを思い出す。また、山本夏彦氏が、戦前に近代化は完了してしまった、また明治時代、いとも簡単に文語文の伝統を捨て口語に移行し多くを失ったことを指摘していたことも想起されてきた。

本書は、本来の日本人を知り、考える上で、現代人にこそふさわしいものだと思う。なお、翻訳も丁寧で違和感がなく、翻訳と感じさせない出来映えとなっている。

日本人って、謙遜なのか、卑屈なのか、批判にたいしてすぐ自信を失ってしまったり、外の文化がなぜかよく見えてしまって自分たちの文化をないがしろにしてしまいがち。
でも、日本の、日本人の持っている文化ってそんなに捨てたもんじゃない、むしろ、英国人の目から見てすごく好ましいものだって、教えてくれる一冊。
ラフカディオハーン、和名小泉八雲。

英語教師として日本にやってきて、明治の日本の文化の高さに素直に驚き、賞賛を送っている。
しかし、八雲が称えた日本の美徳は、もはや過去のものとなってしまったものが多く、とても残念だ。
