ラフカディオ・ハーンa.k.a.小泉八雲が、「日本の伝説や民話などを素材にして書いた」怪談集である。子供の頃に幾つか読んだきりだったので、今回きちんとした形で読みたいと思った。この角川文庫版はヴォリュームたっぷりで、４２編も収録されている。ほとんどショート・ショートと言っても良い位の短い話ばかりなので、非常に読みやすい。皆さんよくご存知の「耳なし芳一のはなし」を筆頭に、「むじな」「ろくろ首」「雪おんな」などの妖怪譚、その他、人情噺や御伽噺とも思える程のヴァリエイションに富んだ数々の怪異譚。贅肉を削ぎ落とした様な簡潔で淡々とした文章が一層恐怖感を募らせてくれる。

　ハーンの『怪談』から「ひまわり」と「蓬莱」を除いた15篇に、『知られざる日本の面影』、『影』、『骨董』などから数編ずつを選び出し、全体で45篇としたもの。ハーンの手がけた日本文学の再話のうち、怪談・奇談系のものはほぼすべて収められている。
　巻末には解説とハーン小伝が収められているが、1956年の初版ということもあり、底の浅い内容に終わっている。
　現在では、ハーンの解釈は多様化し、翻訳もさまざまになされている。本書は1956年に出たものだから、かなりの古くささを感じさせる点は否めない。翻訳に不慣れなのか、ぎこちない部分も目に付く。子ども向けという感覚で訳しているような態度も感じられる。しかし、古い翻訳だけあって堅い言葉づかいにはうまさが光る。侍の形式張った口調など、なかなか良かった。

　ハーンの編んだ怪談集からのアンソロジー。知っている話も多かったが、知らなかったものもあった。
　印象に残るのは夫婦の愛情の物語が多いこと。それも、死んだ妻の嫉妬の話が多い。
　男は結ばれるまでに情熱を傾け、女は死後に、残した夫の再婚を妨げる。　訳者による解説は冷静でよい。
