本書の殺人事件は二重三重の階層構造を成しているが、それらが薄皮を剥ぐ様に、一つ一つ白日の元にさらされてゆく。事件解決のきっかけには、通常では考えられない様な、いくつもの偶然が支配する。一方、全体に流れる湿っぽい雰囲気は、著者の持ち味でもある。作品で扱われるのは殺人事件だ。相応の湿っぽさも、あってしかるべきだ。

本書では夜行列車で隣り合わせになった人々の人生模様から、物語が発展してゆく。著者は「夜行列車で隣り合わせた乗客の、人生に巻き込まれたくないという人は、夜行列車に乗ってはならない」と強調する。夜行列車は人生の縮図なのかも知れない。本書では後に殺されて発見される恵子は、一人旅が好きだ。父親は心配するが、本人は、夜行列車で出会う人に悪い人はいない、という風に反論する。これは、ムチャクチャな理屈だし、物騒な現代においては危険な考えだ。人生の縮図である夜行列車には、善人と悪人が席を同じくしている。

本書は、人の心の内面を深くえぐる。

本題は「夜行列車」だが、別に列車内でミステリー事件が起こるわけではない。たまたま隣り合わせになった人間同士がある事件にからまわれ、複雑な関係が展開される。

森村誠一氏の作品を読むといつでも思うのだが、本当に物語に登場する人間関係の緻密さや個人個人の特徴が良く表されている。
本書でも冒頭からこの物語のプロローグともとれる人間関係（夫婦関係）の経緯に興味を引かれるし、またその人間模様に作者の意図的な感じを受ける。

物語の最後まで行き着くと良く分かるが、人間が犯してしまうちょっとした出来心が発端となって事件があらぬ方向に展開していく過程に、この作品の構成の旨さが出ていると思う。

運命が出会う切っ掛けとなったキンモクセイを本題に取り入れても良かったと思う。あるいは「殺意の香り」と題してでも可笑しくない。
