小川洋子氏の文体を評して、「乾いた」「硬質な」「透明な」といわれる方がたくさんいらっしゃいます。
ぼくはそのこと自体を否定するつもりはありません。
それに加えて、小川氏の作品の「乾いた」文体の底にある「人間への深い愛情」が読む人の感動を誘うのだと思います。

この作品は、異常ともいえる状況での叔父の突然の死、エキセントリックな性癖のある「ニコ」、剥製に限りない執着心を示す「オハラ」、そして青い瞳の謎の女性「ユーリ叔母さん」、そして語り手の「私」。

このように個性的な人物が登場します。
そして、物語も、「ユーリ叔母さんはロマノフ王朝アナスタシアなのか、そうでないのか？」といった謎解きのような展開を示します。
それらは、「乾いた」「硬質な」「透明な」文体で語られます。

そして、そのストーリの底流となるのは、「私」のニコや叔母に対しての深い愛情であると思います。
その想いが、この物語をすてきな夢の中のできごとような物語にしてくれているのでしょう。

しばし、小川洋子ワールドに心を遊ばせるのは悪くない一時ですね。

小川洋子の抑制されし淡々とした文体にホッとして心がはやる。村上春樹の中期の作品の雰囲気を思い出すのは私だけだろうか。グロテスクでエキセントリックな世界を描いているのだけれど、小川洋子の筆にかかると生臭さが消えて、何かの結晶のような崇高で繊細なものに気配を変える。壁、廊下、到るところに剥製・毛皮が飾られた洋館に住む亡命ロシア人の未亡人。姪の「私」は彼女があらゆるものに縫い付ける刺繍の密かな謎に首をかしげる。デザインはいつもデザイン化された「Ａ」一文字。彼女のイニシャルでもないし、どんな意味が隠されているのだろうか･･･。強迫観念に病むこころやさしき青年の奇妙な儀式も印象深い。湖のそばに建つ洋館を舞台にした切なく静かな奇憚。

　主人公の女性を除いて，一癖二癖ある登場人物ばかり出てくる，不思議な物語．その中でも一際異彩を放つのは，「私はロシアの皇族アナスタシアだ」という叔母のユリア．さまざまな持ち物に「A」という刺繍を施し，気が狂っているのかと思えば，主人公のボーイフレンド「ニコ」を誰よりも理解していたりと一概にそうとは言い切れない，実に不思議なキャラクターとして描かれている．
　途中から出てくる怪しい毛皮ブローカ「オハラ」．こいつはろくな人間ではない，という私の勝手な邪推は見事に外れ，皆で団結しあい叔母を守ろうとするところ等から，何処と無く「博士の愛した数式」に流れていた優しい空気を感じた．
　余談だが，叔母が刺繍しているシーンを読んで何となくホーソーンの「緋文字」を思い出した．
