多木浩二さんは、かつて写真家だったというか、「プロヴォーク」という写真小雑誌の同人で、写真評論と少しの写真撮影を経験してきた人らしい。で、多木さんは写真の表現世界と距離を置いて、文明社会を批評していくようになった。その上で批評の武器として有効だと思われたのが、ベンヤミンの思想だったというわけなんでしょうが…。

ぼくは正直言って、「複製技術時代の芸術作品」だけを読むだけでいいと思いました。

ベンヤミンの「複製技術時代の芸術作品」も巻末に所収されており、それと引き比べながら多木氏の論考をみていくことができるが、多木氏の論考自体は参照程度に思っていいと思う。
ベンヤミンをはじめて読む人には道しるべくらいにはなると思う。

まず、よく言われることでですが「複製技術時代の芸術」はベンヤミン読みの専門家からは「出来が悪い」と評されることが多いです。ベンヤミンの持つ多面性、隠喩をベースにする記述手法とは異なる面が多いからであろうと思われます。その反面、ストレートな表現が多く、わかりやすくもなっています。その意味で入門書としては最適ですが、ベンヤミンの本来もっているアクチュアリティーをうまく表現できていません。よって「複製芸術」を読んで、「なんだこんなもんか」と思われる方もいるかもしれません。その意味でなんともアンビバレントな著作ですが、ベンヤミンのいう「アウラ」の一面を描いた著作であることは間違いないので、そのような位置づけ読むのであれば良書ではないでしょうか。
それで、まぁ以上のコンテクストを踏まえて、この「精読」ものですが、まず当然ベンヤミンについてしっかりした著作を書くのであれば、ドイツ語のプロであると同時に、他のベンヤミンの著作をしっかり読み込み、ショーレムやアドルノの書籍を参照にしたうえで、本書の位置づけをしっかりしたものにすることが必須です。特に、この著作はそのいい意味での読みやすさ故に「ベンヤミンの入門書」と言われることが多いので、なおさら、正確な位置づけや解釈が必要です。が、解説はやはり力不足の感は否めません。この著作を読んでパサージュ論あたりに手を伸ばしても、玉砕間違いなしかと思われます。しかし、それでは思想家ベンヤミンの魅力的な側面に触れることもできず、あまりに勿体ないので、この本で、本文のみを読み、その後三島氏や今村氏を参照しつつじっくり腰を据えて他のベンヤミンの著作に取り組むのがお勧めです。今村氏の「ベンヤミンの問い」や三島氏の「ベンヤミン」がいいとは思います。
