この本は、哲学そのものの解説ではない。この本に限らず、竹田氏の著作はほとんどそうだ、と言って構わないと思う。哲学をアカデミズムの内部で説明するのではなく、哲学という考え方の体系を、現代の私たちが意味あるものとして、どのように利用するか、ということが一番重要なこととして提起されている。だからこの本を通して、哲学そのものについて、客観的に（つまり触ることができないものとして）知ることはできない。でもそれは、著者が客観的に哲学をとらることに無意識である、ということでもない。

以前の著作は、言わんとしていることの構想と文章の構成がうまくかみ合っていなかったように思う。だが、この本では従来の構想と構成のずれが、今までになくかみ合ってきているような感覚を覚える。つまり、著者の説明の様式が非常に洗練されつつある、と思う。だから、この本は、哲学というものをとらえる一つの独自な「文脈」として完成度を上げており、他のどんな本にも認められない独自の視点がある。何のことを言っているのかが明確に分かる文章になっていると思う。

哲学を知らない人、知っている人、未成年の人、成人している人を問わず、自分の理想に自分の実体が追いついていない人、それゆえに自分が自分の最大の抑圧者となって苦しんでいる人は、一度読んでみる価値があると思う。

前半では、歴代の有名な哲学者の説の説明と解説がしてあります。
後半は、筆者の主張です。
初心者には後半は難しいけれど、4章までは読んでおいた方がいいと思います。
文中にある“哲学と科学も「絶対的な真理」を捉えるものではなく、「普遍的な理解」をより深く広範なものにしていくための思考方法なのである”。
つまり、自明となっていることを自分で、もう一度考え直すことが哲学だといいます。
そのことにより、自己の本質・世界と自分との関わりを客観的に見出し、自己認識するからだと主張しています。
周囲に流されて、自分を見失ってしまった時におススメの本です

哲学は難しい言葉を使っていてわからない！と思って犬猿していた私。はじめて最後まで読めた最初の本になりました。学生向けに書かれているので、言葉がスムーズに頭の中に入ってきます。日々の生活の中でうやむやにしてしまいがちな問題に対し、筆者は、率直な言葉で語っています。世の中の原理を考えることに興味を感じた本です。ぜひ老若男女に読んでほしい一冊です。
