クリスマス、独り身にはつらいですよねぇ。
仏教徒の癖に騒ぎやがってちくしょー、だいたいクリスマスってこういうもんじゃないだろ！？という具合に僻みつつ、あまり辛いんでクリスマスに読んでました（笑）
で、本書を開くと、サンタの橇をブタが引いているという衝撃的なクリスマスカードがまず目に入り、なんだこれは！？という具合に興味を引かれ、
その後も興味深い内容で一気に読めました。

あとがきを読めばわかりますが、本書はサンタクロースを題材にした人類学の本で、
単なるサンタクロース雑学豆知識！という類の本ではありません。自分でものを考えたい人のための本です。
読みやすく、とっつきやすいテーマなのですが、内容はかなりしっかりしていると思いました。

本書ではまず、サンタクロース、およびクリスマスの起源としてヨーロッパ土着の民俗信仰の話から始まります。
次に、サンタとクリスマスの変遷が、オランダ、アメリカの歴史を通じて書かれます。
サンタクロースに込められた政治的な意図や家族論などにも話が及び、とても面白いです。
ここで、サンタとクリスマスの日本への波及についても書かれ、日本におけるサンタとクリスマスの歴史が意外とふるいことを知りました。
そして最後に、サンタクロースの国フィンランドの話になります。
二月革命だの領土問題だのフィンランドの小国中立主義だの、本のタイトルからは想像のつかない話が続き、サンタクロースからここまで話が広がるのかとびっくり。

著者もいっておりますが、寄り道が多くところどころで話が飛びます。
が、それは本書を単なるサンタ雑学本で終わらせない理由の一つでしょう。
サンタとクリスマスについて詳しくなれるだけでなく、そこから民族や祭り、家族などさまざまな社会的な問題について自分で考えられるようになります。
クリスマスについても、単なる独り身の僻みではない（苦笑）自分なりの考えがもてるようになるでしょう。

世界にはいろいろなサンタクロースがいる。それは周知の事実であるが、著者がまず材料集めに行ったのが旭川の「サンタプレゼントパーク」だったというところにはここの出身者として親近感があった。旭川のサンタプレゼントパークには「サンタタウン」というところがあり、世界中のサンタが集まっている。また「マロースゲレンデ」というスキー場があるが、この「マロース」もロシアでよく聞くサンタである。
まぁこの本と手に取った理由はクリスマスが近いので、これでも読んで知識を深めようという理由からだが、サンタクロースの服が赤い理由、プレゼントはどうして靴の中に入れるのか、日本のサンタクロース信仰の歴史が非常にわかりやすく書かれているのでサンタクロースのことを知りたい人にとっては良書であろう。

クリスマスということで、ずいぶん前に買ったまま読んでいなかった本書を読んでみた。
聖ニコラウスのお祭りとヨーロッパの土俗信仰の行事とがアメリカを経由して、どんな風にサンタクロース像ができあがってきたのかがわかった。
