昔通っていた大学で民法の先生が一読を薦めていた。
「そりゃあ福沢諭吉翁のようなお偉い方の書いたものは学生たるもの読んでおくべきでしょうけれど。」
何となく説教くさく、とっつきにくい本のような気がして、実際に読んだのは働き初めて５年程経ってから。

その読後感・・・

自分の読書人生にとってこの本はなくてはならない一冊となった。

この本は自伝文学の最高傑作ではないか？
「ワシントン自伝」も面白かったが、それにひけを取らぬ面白さ。
今の日本人にとってはこちらの方がより切実で面白い。

また福沢諭吉という人についても、このような人物を自分の国の先駆者として持てたことの幸福を改めて感じるとともに、父祖の世代に対するに対する感謝の念と自分がその恩義にどれだけ応えられているのかという自責の念を改めて強くした。

と、肩肘はらなくても、気軽に楽しめるストーリーが随所に展開されています。

人それぞれでしょうが、まず一読を薦めます。

斉藤孝著の「座右の諭吉」を読んで、原書を読んでみるべし、と手に取ったのがきっかけ。
福沢諭吉は江戸時代末期から明治にかけての激動の時代に、周囲の風潮に流されることなく、自らの理を曲げず、波を乗りこなしたような印象を受ける。
必ずしも精錬潔癖でもなく、慶応義塾の土地を手に入れた件などはドサクサにまぎれてうまくやったなというようなところもあるが、一貫しているのは自分は自分、人は人。無理に相手を論破するではなく、同意できなければ近寄らなければいいというようなさっぱりとしたところは感服する。それを暗殺が日常化した時代にやってのけたところがまたすごい。
個人が自分の主張を持ち、相手の主張のうち受け入れられるところだけ同意し、違う主張もあるんだと認め合うことができなければ、個人主義は成り立たないと指摘しているが、現代にも通じる考えである。
まさに日本人が国際社会でやっていくために必要なことで、これができないために外交で振り回され続けている。
まずは自身の主義主張を持ち、それに矛盾しない態度を常に取ること。それが周囲の変化に惑わされず、かえって信頼や成功を勝ち得ることにつながっていくのだろう。福沢諭吉の人生がそれを物語っているようだ。

福沢諭吉翁が波乱に満ちた生涯を語った自伝中の白眉。 こんなに面白い自伝はない。諭吉の闊達な性格は小気味よい。特に緒方洪庵の適塾の塾生たちの猛勉と奔放な生活は現代の窮屈さをあざ笑うがごとくである。一身二生と自ら述べた幕末と明治の激動の日本を、明るく知的に生き抜いた諭吉の元気を大いにもらおう。
