ジュール・ヴェルヌの作品はこの作品の他に３冊読んだ事があります。どれも１００年以上前に書かれていますが、現代の小説に全く劣りません。

「八十日間世界一周」には（ヴェルヌ特有の）ちょっと変わった謎めいた主人公が登場します。その彼が不可能を当たり前のように可能にしていく姿は頼もしい限りです。

主人公は何事もお金で解決していくのですが、顔には決して出さないけど、情に厚く心にとても余裕のある素敵な紳士だという事がわかります。彼の召使は主人の足を引っ張ってばかりですが、憎めないいいキャラです。

旅行をしたいけど、なかなか行く時間がない方はヴェルヌの作品は是非読んでください。
小説の中の旅行だけど、きっと満足できるはずです。

トランプ仲間との議論がきっかけで「80日間で世界を一周する事は可能」ということを検証する旅に出る物語である。バーチャルな旅行記として、訪れる国々の風景や風俗、次々起こるご当地ものの難題や事件などに読者はワクワクしたに違いない。19世紀末の当時、世界一周を啓蒙する版画雑誌があって、その引用に多くを寄っているという巻末解説があったが、それを体感させてくれる娯楽大作として仕上げたところは手慣れた感じである。イギリス人の主人公にくわえて、彩りを添えるフランス人の召使いや、その他の登場人物も効果的である。

ところで、旅を決断する冒頭のやりとりは、私には沢木耕太朗「深夜特急」を髣髴とさせる（時間的な順番は逆だし、色々違いはあるのだが）。深夜特急の根底には小田実「何でも見てやろう」があると思っていたのだが、むしろ深層心理には本作品があったのかもしれない。

ベルヌの主人公全体に言えることですけど。本当に主人公がすごい！！

どんな困難に陥っても絶対諦めない。不屈の精神で地獄のふちからでも這い上がってくる。

フォッグ氏はかなり変人として名が通っている人間です。お金持ちですが、機械的で、頑固、非社交的です。でもなんというか人の道を絶対に踏み外さない意思の強さを感じる人ですね。奴隷となっていたアウーダ婦人を助け、破産を承知でパスパルテューを助け、後に彼を間違って逮捕するフィッグス警部を援助してやるなどなど・・・。また日常ではホイストって遊びで儲けた金を慈善事業につぎ込むなどなど・・

彼の人間的魅力に私はくらくらですわ（笑）。ただ本当に困難に挑戦する人間の姿ってかっこいいです。子供も大人も絶対読むべき！！。どの世代の人間も忘れてはいけないことが熱い言葉で（例え、翻訳されていてもベルヌのすばらしい名文はすこしも損なわれていません）語られています。
