ジュール・ヴェルヌの作品を読むと彼の知識の多さに驚かされます。地質学、古生物学、考古学、天文学、物理学の知識が至る所にちりばめられていて、他の冒険小説では得られないであろう色々な知識が得られます。名作は何年たっても楽しめるものです。

「翻訳の底本としては、エッツェル社の豪華本をそのままの形で復刻したミッシェル・ド・ロルムレ版を使用し、原著を飾る挿絵も全て収録した」と書いてあります。同じタイトルの本でも読むのならこの本を選ぶべきでしょう。

探検小説はあまり読まないんですが、この作品のあまりの展開のすごさに最後まで一気に読んでしまいました。ユニークな学者と主人公である助手とのやり取りとその絆の深さや、地底内に潜む幽玄な地底世界、そしてそれに立ち向かう登場人物の奮闘振り、さまざまな事柄がこの一冊に入っています。地底の中に海が存在するなんておそらく彼しか考え付かないアイデアでしょう。

この本では主に当時の地質学研究の話題が中心です。
鉱物学の教授であるリデンブロックと甥のアクセルが
地底世界を示唆する古文書を見つける所から始まるのですが、
読み進むにつれてとても興味深い当時の認識がうかがえます。
地底に進むにつれて気温があがるマントル説に対して
「地表面の大気と水と金属が反応したもので地の底は熱くない」

と否定する話は、１４０年前の当時盛んに議論されていた事なのでしょう。
登場人物それぞれに癖があるのも楽しく読める理由の１つです。
