左のページに原詩、右のページに対訳。実に読みやすい、岩波文庫のこのシリーズはどの本もこの方式で、原詩の味、訳者の訳の味と較べられるのが良い。エドガー・アラン・ポーにこんなロマンティックな詩があったとは・・とにかく一度手にとってみれば、新しい発見が。最後にある詩は、有名なThe Ravenです。恋人レノーアを失って、夜中悲しみのポーの部屋を訪れるThe Raven、「Nevermore」と鳴きます。読んでから何日も、黒く大きなカラスの果てない暗さのイメージと、空ろな鳴き声「Nevermore」が心の中で響きます。

ポーの詩が好きです。特に好きなのはアナベル・リーとユーラールームです。
ユーラルームはポーの妻ヴァージニアが若くして２４歳で死んでしまった年に書かれたものです。
アナベル・リーは、その２年後に、ポーが４０歳で亡くなった歳に、新聞に掲載された詩です。
ヴァージニアに対する追慕の気持ちがあふれています。

対訳も嬉しいものです。詩は原文で読んだ方が味わいが深いです。
翻訳も絶妙ですが、原詩のもつ美しさが感じられます。
アナベル・リーは律調が弱弱強で、Annabel Lee、sea、me、weと、脚韻も[i:]を踏んでおり浜に寄せる波の響きを感じさせます。
朗読CDも発売されているので、原音を味わわれる事をお勧めします。

ポーといえば怪奇・推理小説が有名ですが、美しい詩人でもあります。

・私はポーの小説の方のファンである。この詩集はとてもロマンチックで、彼の別の面を知った。非常に意外である。代表作の“Annabel Lee”(アナベル・リー)、“The Bells”(鐘のさまざま)、“The Raven”(大鴉)など２３の詩が収められている。
・詩人で英文学者である加島氏の、脚注および解説が素晴らしい。解説は「はじめに」を含めると４０ページ以上におよび、詩だけでなく、ポーの経歴、私生活にも言及している（陸軍士官学校中退だったのか）。この岩波のシリーズの、左に原詩、右に翻訳との企画はとても有効で、他の詩人のものも読んでみたいと思う。

・なお、ロック・アーティストのルー・リードは、この詩集に収められている“The Raven”をもとに同名のアルバムを発表している。私がこの詩集を読む気になったのは、そのためであった。
