サトクリフ,ローズマリ
1920‐92。イギリスの児童文学作家・小説家。2歳の時の病気がもとで歩行困難になり、のちに車いすでの生活を余儀なくされる。14歳で美術学校に入り細密画を学ぶが、1950年ごろから小説を発表する。ローマン・ブリテン三部作『第九軍団のワシ』『銀の枝』『ともしびをかかげて』(1959年カーネギー賞受賞)で、歴史小説家としての地位を確立した(のちに四作めとなる『辺境のオオカミ』を発表)

猪熊 葉子
児童文学者・翻訳家。聖心女子大学名誉教授(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

この本を、石井桃子著「児童文学への旅」で知った。
石井桃子とサトクリフとの交流を紹介するなかで本書の紹介があり、
タイトルから、ファンタジーの世界を勝手に想像していたが、
図書館で偶然本書を手に取り、表紙をみてびっくり。
「ローマ！？」
読み始めたら、ぐいぐい引き込まれ、上下巻一気読み。
塩野七海の「ローマ人の物語」側からしかみていなかったブリテン。
そのブリテンが、あたらしい表情で迫ってきた。
サトクリフ、読みまくるしかない！
それにしても、これ、「児童文学」？
この分類のせいで、
多くの人が知らずにいてしまうのではないだろうか。
対象は「中学生以上」になっているけど、
もしも私が中学生のときに出会っていたら、
「だからどうなんだ？」で終わってしまっていたと思う。
今、出会えて、本当にうれしい。
