わが国言語学界の両巨頭による対談本。言語学に関する概論的な知識が網羅されているわけではないので、その手のものを求める方には余り向かないが、個性の異なる２人の知性が様々なテーマをめぐってぶつかり合い共鳴する様そのものに、一読の価値あり。個人的には、二人ともチョムスキーのイネイトな言語観を批判しつつも、自らの学問の限界をも心得た彼の学問的態度や体を張った政治運動への敬意と共感を忘れていない点や、田中氏の「神に対する自己の存在という意識」が冠詞のないラテン語をつぶして冠詞のあるロマンス語を生んだというコセリウ言語学の解釈（読み込み）が、印象に残った。

このお二人、私は勝手に、不倶戴天の敵同士と思っていたので、激論を期待していたのですが、齢古希を越え（田中氏）傘寿を終えた（鈴木氏）お二人、そんなことはしないのですね。

井筒俊彦、亀井孝、服部四郎、村山四郎といった故人の言語学者にまつわるエピソードや深い敬愛と反発などは、お互いに興味深そうに聞き入り、チョムスキー理論に対しては、一致して違和感を持つ。実に和気藹々。
また、大議論に発展しそうな漢字問題についても、
田中「それでも、ぼくは漢字が少なければ少ないほうがよいと思う。」
鈴木「それはぼくもそう思いますよ。」
…
田中「漢字はもっと減らせますね。」
鈴木「うんと減らせる。」
と意見は一致。激論どころか、
田中「その部分を高津さんはもちろんやらない。泉井さんもやらなかった。そのあとやったのが鈴木孝夫なのですよ。ちょっとここでうんと褒めておこう、それはすごく大事な点だから（笑）。」
とか、
鈴木「あなたは本当にいろんなことを知ってますね。驚きです。」
と相手をたたえるばかり。
対論のあとがきでも、田中さんは、「私の書物に親しんで来られた読者の中には、なんだ、あいつは自分の本中で、鈴木先生のことをずい分とこきおろしていたじゃないかと思われる方がいるかもしれない。だけどねえ、どうでもいい人のことなんか、むきになってこきおろしたりしないもんだぜ、と私は言いたい。」と述べています。やや物足りない対論です。

鈴木氏、田中氏の著作に親しんでいる人にとって、二人の思想については特に新しいことはありませんが、二人の目を通して、言語学史の復習ができます。
