The tenor player Zoot Sims was always welcome at any jazz gathering and the more informal and spontaneous it was the better. His universal appeal lay in the extrovert and uncomplicated style of his playing and he could swing at the drop of a note. Up to the time of his death in 1985 at the age of 59 he travelled the world appearing as a guest soloist with a local rhythm section. This album was taped under those very conditions when Sims came to Copenhagen to play at the Jazzhouse Slukefter. But the rhythm section was no pick-up affair: two Americans, pianist Kenny Drew and drummer Ed Thigpen were joined by Denmark's internationally renowned bass player Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen to give Sims near-perfect support on a nine tune programme made up of jazz standards and vintage Broadway material. On pieces such as "Groovin' High" and the up-tempo "I'll Remember April" Sims is at his very best. He switches to soprano for one tune, a touching version of "The Very Thought Of You" and gets deep into the blues on Gary McFarland's "Blue Hodge".
Live In Copenhagen is one of Sims's best latter-day albums. --
