本書ではXAMPP(ザンプ)という統合パッケージを使って、WWWサーバーやメールサーバーといった、自宅サーバーに必要なソフトを一括インストールして構築する方法を解説しています。

今まで自宅サーバーを構築するには、WWWサーバーやメールサーバー、FTPサーバー、データベースサーバーなど、目的別にそれぞれインストールしなくてはなりませんでした。しかしXAMPPならWWWサーバーのApache、メールサーバーのMercury/32、FTPサーバーのFileZilla、データベースサーバーのMySQLがひとまとめになっているのでとても簡単です。

本書ではインターネットで公開するためのセキュリティ設定を行い、実際にインターネットからアクセスできるよう、インターネットの技術解説やルーターの設定手順、サーバーの設定方法などを詳しく解説しています。またサーバーをただ立ち上げるのではなく活用して楽しめるよう、BlogシステムのWordPressをインストールしてBlogを公開したり、ダイナミックDNSで自分専用のサーバーネームを取得して運用する方法についても解説しています。

自宅サーバーを構築して終わりというのではなく、構築した後も活用していき、やりながらサーバーの知識が身につけられるよう技術的な解説にもこだわりました。パソコンは好きだけどサーバーは初めて・・・という方向けの内容ですが、応用編ではBlogのカスタマイズや独自ドメインを取得して運用する方法などもあり、初心者の方だけではなく中級者~上級者の方でも楽しめる内容になっています。

CD-ROMにはXAMPP for Windowsをはじめ、BlogシステムのWordPressや、ダイナミックDNS管理ソフトのDiCEなど必要なソフトを収録していますので、すぐにサーバー構築がはじめられます。

同じXAMPPをWindowsで使った内容の本があるが、こちらの方が総じて親切丁寧というか説明の勘所を掴んでいる。ただ残念なのは所々誤字や明らかな図の間違いが見られる。私は初めてだったので一番迷った間違いは（初版です）P.225の「３」の図、「保存する」ボタンを押すのが正解なのに図には「実行する」に丸が付いていてフィールドが延々追加されてしまった。。あ、ここは「保存する」ボタンだ！と気が付いてやっと「４」へ進めた。他にもあったと思う。その他内容自体はとてもわかりやすく初めてでもzen-cartを立ち上げられた（私はこれが目的）後はzen-cartやapacheの各専門書へ心置きなく進む事ができます。作者様ありがとう御座います。

XAMPPというのはサーバー構築と運用に必要なソフトが
ワンセットになった無料パッケージ。

ゆえに、アプリケーション間の相性や
バージョンの整合性なども気にする必要がなく、
手軽にサーバー構築ができるワンパッケージとして
初心者やテストサーバー用途に大人気です。

ただ、その手軽さゆえ、知識が何もない状態でも
「なんとなくサーバーができてしまう」という恐ろしさがあります。
トラブルが起きても「なにが原因でなにをどうすれば解決するか」
まったく途方に暮れてしまうのです。
（かく言うわたしもその一人です…＾＾；）

この本は、そうした初心者が陥りがちな落とし穴、
基本的なサーバーの仕組み、最低限必要なセキュリティ対策など、
実践的な情報をわかりやすくていねいに解説してくれており、
初めてのサーバー構築でもつまずくことなく進められるでしょう。

文章も平易で図解もわかりやすく、とても好感のもてる良書です。

Windowsのパソコンを自宅サーバーにするための方法はわかりやすくて,まだ自宅サーバーを構築していない自分でも何とかできました。またWeb,Blog,FTP等サーバーも本の通りに操作すると簡単にできてしまいました。ただ,オンラインショッピングだけ画面,注文書等に日付が正確に表示できない部分が本の中にも見られました。（自分のパソコンでも同じ）ここだけが残念。
しかし,自宅サーバー構築してサーバーソフトを動かすには非常にわかりやすく書かれていて良書だと思います。
ただし,XAMPPやサーバーソフトの仕様等はあまり書いてないで自分でカスタマイズする場合はPHPやMYSQLの勉強はどうしても必要になります。
