まず一言。素晴らしい！ほとんど完璧。かつ驚くべきは、この上なくストーレートなロックチューンでありながら、何度聴いても「○○っぽい」なんて陳腐な形容が脳裏に浮かばぬこの新鮮さ。絶妙な憂いを含んだ英国気質の甘いメロディーが、一方で米国的な土臭さを感じさせるバンドアンサンブルを伴って溢れ出す。

デモ版から一気に化けたのが、Tr.6"Stil Take You"
茶目っ気たっぷりの悪ガキっぽいイントロのリフ
つんのめり、モンドリ打って驀進するドラミング
甘いメロのヴォーカルは有無を言わさず畳みかけ
酔狂なギターフレーズによるインタールードを挟み、、、

そして怒涛の如く爆ぜる終盤の展開！
瀑布となって覆い被さるギターに乗り、全ての音が全力でぶつかって来るその昂揚感たるやもう最高。アルバム中盤のミドルテンポの楽曲群では、その類稀なメロディメーカーっぷりを如何なく見せつけ、ウォール・オブ・ギターと繊細でスウィートな旋律が双璧をなして打ち寄せる"A Certain Romance"で豪快に幕を引く。

不思議と「この音が世界を変える」なんて大仰な感覚はしない。そんなフレーズが馬鹿馬鹿しく感じられるほどに、純粋な輝きを放つ楽曲に圧倒・昂揚させられる。あまりにも有名過ぎて、、、なんて理由だけで敬遠してる人、その気持ちも何となく分かるけど、是が非でも一度聴いてもらいたい、そんな快作。

またイギリスにイキのいい新人が現れましたね。全体的にアッパーな曲が多くエネルギッシュで、聴いていて気持ちがいいアルバムです。青春の曲、といった感じでしょうか。1曲目の『the view from the afternoon』もつかみOKで、11曲目の『when the sun goes down』は本当にテンション上がります。個人的に特に素晴らしかったのは、ラストの『a certain romance』です。なんというか、「放課後の夕方、友達と別れて一人で自転車で家に帰っている時の曲」みたいな感じです。物思いにふけりつつも、何か希望を胸に抱えているというか。ごめんなさい、訳がわかりませんね・・・。
とにかく、素晴らしいアルバムでした。

デビューから少々時間が経過してしまったが、セカンドの良さもあり（一部では評価が低いが）改めてファーストに戻ったが、やはり良い。
出身地であるシェフィールドには何度か行った事があるが、アルバムジャケットの写真とアルバム自身が非常に良くマッチしていて、インディー魂＝等身大＝媚を売らなさを感じる。ストーンローゼズの様に周囲に影響され自滅しないで欲しいと願うのは、私だけではないはず。
