著者について

Harriet Ziefert has written many children's books for HarperCollins including What's A Vacation? and When Will Santa Come, both illustrated by Claire Schumacher, the Bear Boar Books, illustrated by Susan Baum, and Scooter's Christmas, illustrated by Rick Brown. Ms. Ziefert lives in New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Simms Taback has collaborated with Harriet Ziefert on many HarperCollins children's books. Some of their titles include Noisy Barn!, Zoo Parade!, and the sticker book readers, On Our Way to the Forest and On Our Way to the Water. Mr. Taback lives in New York City.



Lillie James illustrated What Is Easter? for HarperCollins earlier this year. Ms. James lives in North Salem, NY.

We enjoyed WHAT IS EASTER and WHAT IS CHRISTMAS Lift-the Flap stories so much that we got this one, too. Here in Japan, the kids do not get exposed to other cultures or religions as easily as they would in the US. The lift-the-flap aspect and the warm, colorful illustrations combine with an accessible text that is neither too long nor difficult to understand for a brief explanation about why and how Passover is celebrated, which manages to hold my active sons` attentions. While I understand the constraints of keeping the book down to a palatable length, I wish it also explained the significance of all the special dishes, as well as the questions the children ask in the Passover ceremony.

We very much enjoyed the "lift-the-flap" WHAT IS CHRISTMAS? and WHAT IS EASTER?, but I found this explanation of Passover a little lacking, even though I am a gentile. Compared to life in the US, there is so little exposure to other cultures and religious beliefs, that I wanted to broaden my childrens` awareness (How many Japanese children know that "yudayajin" exist outside of the bible?) of Judaism and also the connections to Christianity. Ms Zeifert gives a broad overview of Pesache, including its origins in Moses and the Exodus, by telling a pleasant story of one family`s celebration ("afikomen" became the favorite new word, for awhile.) However, I think children would also enjoy hearing the questions and answers the children in the family must recite, which explain the significance of the special items. Maybe she was not allowed enough pages? Still, I found this a helpful beginning; and there`s always the internet.

This book is recommended for children ages 3-7. The story covers a family preparations and celebration of Passover. The mother talks about the plagues on the land of Egypt culminating in the night of Passover when Jewish first-born children were protected and the subsequent flight of the Jews from Egypt. There is a great discription of the seder and the significance of matzo. Each page has a flap that allows for curious children to see something special involved with the Holiday of Passover. This is a nice and bright book for young curious minds.
