'70s初期から活動を続けているカナディアン･ハードロックの老舗であるエイプリル･ワイン。正直な所、本国カナダはさて置き、他国(特に米･英で)どれ程メジャーなのかは知りませんが、本作('88年作)は米国でのアルバム･セールスはそれ程上手く行かなかったかと思います。
ところが、小生がエイプリル･ワインを知ったのは正にこのアルバムで、でした。殊にアナログ時代のA面([1]-[5])の流れ、キャッチーなメロディといやに低音が響いてくる(^^;適度なハードさが何ともいい塩梅でブレンドされており、一発でハマりました。
ハード･ナンバーよし、バラード系よしと、その手のバンドの必要条件は押えていたと思うのですが･･･。勿論、全てのバンドが商流に乗っかる必要性などありませんが、長年の活動で培った非常にいいセンスを持ったバンドであろうと思われるだけに、一花咲かせてあげたかった気もあります(一花が咲かなかった？のは、バンドに華がなかったから･･･失礼しましたm(_ _)m)。
閑話：
[1]はスターシップが'85年の作品'Knee Deep In The Foolpa'(邦題：フープラ)で披露したナンバーですね。

19曲収録された、この「The Hits :Best of April Wine」は、91年に発売されたCD４枚組ボックス「The April Wine Collection」を１枚にまとめたCD (ボックスDisc1-The Singlesの曲順を変更した19曲) ですが、エイプリルワインというバンドを語る上で欠かせない曲をほとんど網羅しているので、余程のコアなファンでない限り、十二分に堪能できるベスト盤だと思います。

結成は69年で、20年以上のキャリアを誇る。80年代末に一度解散したが90年代に入って再結成、現在も活動中。その長いキャリアの中でアメリカでトップ40入りしたシングルが３曲(You Could Have Been A Lady/Roller/Just Between You And Me)しかないので、日本では81年の名盤「Nature of the Beast」ぐらいでしか認知されていないのだが、本国カナダでは数多くの曲をチャートインさせ長きに渡って支持されているバンドである。英国でいうところのステイタス・クオー、日本でいうとアルフィーみたいな感じでしょうか（＾＾；。

軽快な曲は努めて爽やかに、ヘヴィな曲はポップなメロディーで、バラードはクサいぐらいに甘く切なくという、７０年代からMTV時代となる８０年代にかけて活躍した、いわゆる「アリーナ・ロック」の条件を見事に満たしているバンドである。もしあなたがブルー・オイスター・カルトの「バーニング・フォー・ユー」や、REOスピードワゴンの「キープ・オン・ラヴィング・ユー」等が好きならば一聴の価値はあると思います。
