An indispensable introduction to El Caribe off-the-beaten-path. If you're willing and can make the connections to get to these isolated islands, this book will show you what's lying in wait. Far from the maddening crowds of built up industrial grade tourism, there still remain island experiences wher you really can leave the mainland behind and exhale for one long two week vacation. And this book points out just where these types of escapes are. Culebra, 17 miles off the eastern tip of Puerto Rico was my first experience of the undiscovered Caribbean. Truth be told, Willes' book is quickly becoming dated - this is surely no criticism, simply an observation. "Development" and all it engenders has even begun to infect Culebra: the downtown area is perpetually torn and re-torn up as a sewer system gets laid under the streets. All the more reason to buy this book now and take it up on its challenge before too much more of El Caribe succumbs to the tsunami of progress.
