The gulf that separates expatriate Bengali parents from their American-raised childrenand that separates the children from Indiaremains Lahiri's subject for this follow-up to Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake. In this set of eight stories, the results are again stunning. In the title story, Brooklyn-to-Seattle transplant Ruma frets about a presumed obligation to bring her widower father into her home, a stressful decision taken out of her hands by his unexpected independence. The alcoholism of Rahul is described by his elder sister, Sudha; her disappointment and bewilderment pack a particularly powerful punch. And in the loosely linked trio of stories closing the collection, the lives of Hema and Kaushik intersect over the years, first in 1974 when she is six and he is nine; then a few years later when, at 13, she swoons at the now-handsome 16-year-old teen's reappearance; and again in Italy, when she is a 37-year-old academic about to enter an arranged marriage, and he is a 40-year-old photojournalist. An inchoate grief for mothers lost at different stages of life enters many tales and, as the book progresses, takes on enormous resonance. デビュー作である短編集「Interpreter of Maladies」で一躍有名になった彼女です。私も「短編の名手」と絶賛させて頂きましたが、その後長編「The Namesake」でまたびっくりさせて頂きました。３冊目がこの本、短編集です。５つの作品からなる「Part One」と、一組の男女をテーマにして書かれた三部作の「Part Two」。中身は･･･？彼女自身がそうであるＮＲＩ（インド非居住インド人）のお話であることはデビュー作以来一貫して変わりがないのですが、中身は毎回進化して、この中にある８つの作品全てが、これまでの二冊に比べ、より深みがあり奥行きがあり味わいのある圧倒的な内容となっています。彼女の成長と飛躍が手に取るように分かった、と言うより、彼女が世界有数の語り部の一人になったことが嬉しかった、と言うべきでしょうか。とにかく、表題作となった冒頭の「Unaccustomed Earth」で心を鷲掴みにされてしまった私は、最後まで残りの７作を貪るように読んでしまいました。 ＮＲＩならではのエピソードが鏤められています。ＮＲＩならではのストーリー展開です。その節回し、コブシは、ＮＲＩにしか出来ないもの。でも、そこの描かれていることは、ＮＲＩ特有のものではなくて、人生、というものに対する「深い理解」なのです。そしてその理解ある面、「愛情」というものを遥かに越ちゃってます。例えば表題作。おじいちゃんの静かで穏やかな立ち振る舞い、その彼になついてしまった孫息子のちょっとした悪戯、二つが重る焦点に娘であり母である主人公が貼り付けたものは･･･。 これから先、彼女の出す作品は「全て即座に読むぞ」という固い決心をさせてくれた一冊でした。

ラヒリ人気の理由の一つは、インドに住んだことのないインド人という彼女特有のバックグラウンドを用いているものの、作品の普遍性にあると思う。そのバックグラウンドは、ほとんどの読者とは関係ないため、登場人物の直面する状況は理解しにくいであろうとの前提に立ち読みはじめる。ところが、読み進めるうちに、バックグラウンドを忘れ、自分自身の家族像へ感情移入が進んでしまう。これは、彼女が第１作から築いた独自のスタイル、すなわちごく身近な日常にできた小さな綻びを大げさに書き立てることなく仕上げているからだと思う。Unaccustomed Earthは、母を昨年亡くした後、父との距離の保ち方を模索する私にとって意義深い作品。同居、交友関係、地元との密度、孫、核家族等、考える視点は読者ごとに異なる。作品集に収められているアルコール中毒や義理の親との関係も普遍的テーマであると思う。原文で読むことで、静かな文体を味わうことができる。

しばらく前に話題になった著者のデビュー作『Interpreters of Maladies』はさほどの印象を受けず、数編読んだままになっていた。第２作『The Namesake』が出ていたこともほとんど知らなかったし、その後あまり注目していなかった。が、たまたま「クリック中身！検索」で本書の冒頭の数頁を読んで、あちらとこちらの波長が合ってしまった。すばらしい書き出しである。（未購入の方は、ぜひともこの冒頭だけでも読んでみられることをお薦めします！）この作家の紡ぎ出す世界に数日間没頭することができた。これは相当な完成度のある短篇集であると言わざるをえない。不思議なのが、楽しい話はほとんどないし、トーンは一貫して短調であるのに、ぐいぐい読めてしまう。デビュー作を数編読んだだけだが、この作家は短篇作家として驚くべき成長を遂げているといってよいのではないだろうか。 印象に残った一節を引いておく。 And yet he felt justified. Wasn't it since Monika's birth that so much of his and Megan's energy was devoted not to doing things together but devising ways so that each could have some time alone, she taking the girls so that he could go running in the park on her days off, or vice versa, so that she could browse in a bookstore or get her nails done? And wasn't it terrible, how much he looked forward to those moments, so much so that sometimes even a ride by himself on the subway was the best part of the day? Wasn't it terrible that after all the work one put into finding a person to spend one's life with, after making a family with that person, even in spite of missing that person, as Amit missed Meagan night after night, that solitude was what one relished most, the only thing that, even in fleeting, diminished doses, kept one sane? ("A Choice of Accomodation", p.115) ここには子供ができた後の夫婦の有り様が述べられている。要するに「子供ができると夫婦の中はそれ以前にはもう戻らない」というある種の真理について述べたものだが、ここまで的確に重厚な英語で述べられてしまうと、「はい、そのとおりです」と言わざるをえない。結婚して子供を授かったものにしか分からない悲哀がにじみ出ている。 ちなみに、本書冒頭にホーソーンの言葉が引用されており、それが本書を貫く通奏低音となっている。これはなかなかうまい引用だと思う。タイトルのUnaccustomed Earthという言葉もそこから取られている。
