Album Description

With a strong, smooth tone and an amazing flow of fresh ideas every time he soloed, tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks should have been a major jazz artist, but his legacy is confined to a series of dates that he did for Blue Note as a sideman and leader. "True Blue" is the only album under his own name to come out in his lifetime. He and Freddie Hubbard had recorded Hubbard's "Open Sesame" a week earlier. Based on these two albums alone, Brooks should have been recognized as an important new voice in jazz. This CD adds to two alternate takes to the original LP.

Recorded on June 25, 1960 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

仕事に疲れたあと、ザワついた気持ちから解放され、喧騒から離れて独りで楽しみたいJazz。酒でも飲みながら聴くと、自分の生き方が格好良く思える。

ブルーで、少しけだるい感じの音色が良い。速過ぎず、遅過ぎないテンポも良い。SaxとTpの２管の音がからみ、流暢に流れていく。正統派であり、気持ちの良いJazz。ピアノを中心としたバックもブルーな雰囲気をかもし出す。アルバム一枚、気持ちよく聴き通せる。一枚を聴き終わった後には、そのまま寝れば、格好良くなった自分が主人公のいい夢がみられそうだ。そんな雰囲気を創れる、アルバムを通して聴きたい名盤です。

　今日はそこそこ仕事もはかどったなという充実感で早めの夜に職場を切り上げたようなときには、帰路の i-pod で骨太のハードバップが聴きたくなる。どっしりと力強いのを大きな音で。例えばこのアルバムだ。
　1960年はFreddie Hubbard(tp)、Duke Jordan(p)、Sam Jones(b)、Art Taylor(ds)、Tina Brooks(ts) によるクインテット。
　ブルーノート・レーベルに残した３枚のリーダー作「Minor Move」「Back to the Tracks」「True Blue」のなかでも、これは特に彫りの深いメロディが並ぶ印象深いアルバム。名曲が揃っていると思う。ミディアムテンポの[1]はブルージーにテナーが歌う歌う。その勢力的なテナーサウンドにほれぼれしているところに[3]、更にタイトルトラック[4]と続けてズシンと腹に響き渡ってくる。これはいい。
