形式:ハードカバー
500ページを超す大作。「sound and fury」に満ちているが、何を意味しているか著者はあえて示そうとしないのはジャーナリストとしての矜持であろう。内容はほとんど対話と時系列の記述で構成され難しい用語はない。ただし、金融市場メインプレーヤの名前、credit default swaps, due diligenceなどの言葉の意味を理解しておいたほうがいい。また登場人物が多い上、立場が激しく入れ替わりするもので、私は巻頭の関係者リストと写真を参照しながら読み進めた。読み終わると、しばし茫然。著者によればこの本の芽生えは2008年の9月15日、その日の終わりごろに、Lehman Brothersは倒産、Merrill LynchはBofAに売られ、AIGは国有化された。この本はその一部始終である。目の前で行っている巨大な崩壊を充分に堪能あそばせ。

レビュータイトルはリーマンブラザーズ崩壊直後、ブッシュ元大統領がポールソン元財務長官に向かって呟いた言葉。その答えは本書にはない。本書は550頁に及ぶ汗と涙と睡眠不足と騒乱の人間ドラマになっている。場所を変えての会議と会議と会議の連続がめまぐるしく叙述されており、興味の薄い読者がそれを面白く読めるかは謎。
「来週には資金が枯れる」という言葉がモルガン・スタンレーCEOの口から、ゴールドマンサックスCEOの口から吐かれる。三菱東京UFJが九十億ドル小切手(←！)をまさにその日に手渡してやらなかったら、モルガンスタンレーは倒れ、ゴールドマンサックスがその後に続くのは確実だったという。ウェルズファーゴCEOが「お前らのせいで」とウォール街の重鎮たちを睨み付け、JPモルガンCEOが｢ゴールドマン倒産に備えよ｣と社内チームを発足させ、AIGのCEOが金庫から何十億ドルもの担保証券を掘り起し、社員がそれをカバンに詰めてFRBに走る。財務省がさまざまな組み合わせの合併を半ば強制的に模索させる中、シティグループのCEOがゴールドマンサックスのCEOを撥ねつけて言う、｢我々は銀行なんだ。ゴールドマンと合併なんかしたら大切な預金をギャンブルに使われると思われるだろう｣。いつの間にか投資銀行モデルが忌むべきモノになっている。
危機にイデオローグなし、という言葉がよく分かるドキュメンタリー物だった。誰しもが一日一日をサバイバルすることしか考えていない。そういう時間を必死に生きる人間たちを描写されると、鳥瞰的な批判などする気がなくなる。リーマンCEOのファルド氏など哀れで同情するし、危機の数週間を奔走する為だけにCEOに就任したようなAIGのウィルムスタッド氏も気の毒だ。印象が悪いのはSEC長官とスタン・オニールくらいか。おそらく金融危機の真犯人は本書には登場していない。
