   大げさではなく、今作はサンボーン全盛期の80年代ワーナー・ブラザーズ時代以降の作品としては最高傑作と言っていい。このアルト・サックス奏者のバーブ移籍第1弾は、参加ミュージシャンのレベルも最高級だ。サンボーンの選曲もすばらしく、他のアーティストの有名な曲ばかりにもかかわらず、見事に彼流にアレンジしている。かつてのグラミー受賞作品も悪くはないが、今作に収められた10曲では、何倍も磨きがかかった彼の演奏が聴ける。

   どんなグルーブでもお任せのオールスターバンドを構成するのは、偉大なラッセル・マローン（ギター）、ステップス・アヘッドのクリスチャン・マクブライド（ビブラフォン）、長年のパートナーであるリッキー・ピーターソン（キーボード）といった面々。彼らをバックに往年の名曲を見事にリメイク。スティービー・ワンダーの「Isn't She Lovely」はバラードに、永遠の名曲「Harlem Nocturne」はワールド・ミュージック風に味付けされている。60年代にそれぞれハービー・マンとドナルド・バードで有名になった「Comin' Home Baby」と「Christo Redentor」は情感たっぷりに演奏され、まるでサンボーン・オリジナルのメロディーかと思うくらい。彼の優雅なアルト・サックスの音色が全編にあふれているが、「Sugar」と彼のオリジナル3曲のうちの1曲「Spider B」ではマローンのギターがフィーチャーされている。(Mark Ruffin, Amazon.com)

　このＣＤを聴いて、自分がサンボーンを過小評価していた事が恥ずかしくなった。素晴らしい出来栄え！　買う価値十分の作品だ。
　

　１５年前、ロンドンの「ロニー･スコッツ」でジェームス･ムーディーのライブに行った時、舞台の袖でＪ．ムーディーと立ち話をしていたら、カッコイイ男性客が近付いて来た。黒い光物のジャケットを着たその人が、なんとデビッド･サンボーン。当時の私は、｢フュージョンなんかジャズじゃない！｣という嫌なジャズファンで、Ｊ．ムディーがサンボーンを紹介してくれたのに大して感激もせず、儀礼的に握手しただけだった。彼はお客として、Ｊ．ムーディーを聴きに来ていたのだ。

　彼は勉強熱心なのだろう。このＣＤでは、みんな知ってるスタンダードをサンボーン風!に調理し、素晴らしい味でサービスしてくれる。１曲目の｢comin' home baby」から、もうその世界にはまり込む。｢harlem nocturne｣の演奏は、これがあの曲か！と思わせるほど新鮮。｢tequila」のアップテンポな演奏も爽快。「isn't she lovely｣｢sugar｣もサンボーンならでは演奏で驚かされる。
　
　バックも一流が揃い、特にマイク･マイニエリ(vib),スティーブ･ガッド(ds)が渋い。フュージョン時代を経験したベテランジャズファンにも堪らない１枚である。

皆さんのカスタマーレビューを見て購入しましたが、さほど「新鮮」はかんじませんででした。これなら、少し以前のものになりますが、個人的には、アルバム「Hearsay 」あたりの方ずっともっと！サンボーンらしくっていいと思いました・。

LPの時代だったら、「針をのせた途端、恋に落ちた」と書けるのに。わたしはジャズフリ-クじゃないから、フレ-ジングがどうの、って話はできないし、聞くときも、自分にとって「いい」か「悪い」かしかない。そして、たいていは、大好きなミュ-ジシャンだと、「最近のがいちばんいい」ってことになる。だけど、はっきりいって、サンボ-ンの場合は、そう言うには躊躇してしまうものがあった。でも、このＣＤ、文句なく最高。サンボ-ンのＣＤはもう絶版になってしまったものも含めて全部もっているけれど、これが最高です。
