『カラー・バイ・ナンバーズ』をリアルタイムで聴いたのは高校生の時。
ヘビメタ好きの多かった仲間内では、カルチャー・クラブが好きだなどとは口が裂けてもいえませんでしたが、愛聴していました。
年月が経ち30代後半になりましたが、今こうしてベスト盤で聴いても、当時の曲はホントに良いと改めて思います。
とりあえずカルチャー･クラブ聴くならこれで充分、という選曲。
中でも「カーマ…」と「ポイズン…」がやっぱり好きだなあ。

ご覧の通り，キモいと綺麗の境界スレスレを往く厚化粧の男ボーイ・ジョージ。本名ジョージ・オダウドがボーイ（Boy）を源氏名とした背景に，中学へ上がるころ目にしたデヴィッド・ボウイ（Bowie）の衝撃があったと考えるのは乱暴ではないだろう。

高校時代，当時の彼女の影響で化粧に凝り，道を踏み外した彼は服飾業界を転々。モデルとして知られるようになるが，あくまで歌手になることを目指し，機会を窺っていた。音楽青年だった他のメンバーと邂逅，バンドの前身が形作られたのは1981年。音楽好きではあったが，むしろキャリアはモデルだったリーダーと，専門化した職人よりも万人受けするアイドルを求めた時代の思惑が，静かに一致をみた瞬間だった。

徹底した派手な演出と，ひたすらポップでキャッチーな楽曲。メディアの力を最大限に生かし，「君は完璧さ」をチャートの最上位に送り込んだのは僅か１年後。1983年に発表した第二作『カラー・バイ・ナンバーズ』で人気はピークを迎え，見事一山当てることに成功する。しかし，皮肉にも彼らはまた，飽きられるのも異様に早かった。急速に人気が下降したのは1986年。文字通りたった４年の天下だった。

感じるところがあったのだろう。1987年，彼らは４年間を総括して本ベスト盤を発表。間もなく自身が去ることになる華やかな夢舞台を，これ以上ない選曲で形に残していったのだった。1980年代の音楽文化を，これほど端的に説明したアルバムもない。その意味で，まさしく傑作と思うのだが如何だろうか。
