これはマザーグースの１つで、重ね歌なのです。ジャックの建てた家に１つずつ色んな物が加わり最後は楽しい大所帯。長いので何が何だかわからなくなるのですが絵本だと一目瞭然。カラフルで楽しいので子供と一緒に唱えてるうちに簡単にラストにたどり着けます。この本は携帯にも便利なミニ版。絵もカラフルで分かりやすく、小さいお子様とお出かけの時に見ても楽しいです。ページもしっかり厚いので子供がかじっても大丈夫。いたれりつくせりの楽しい絵本です。

このシリーズのA Farmer in the Dellを買ってとてもよかったので、これも買ってみましたがちょっとハズレでした。Farmer in the Dellの場合は登場人物が順番に出てくるのでホールが生きてましたが、この積み重ね歌の場合はうまく行ってません。少ないページ数に登場人物を押しこんだために、最初のページに既にhouseとratとmaltが見えていて、どのページにも先取りした人物が表れているため、煩雑で分かりにくいです。右ページの絵と左ページの詩の内容がずれていたり。先に一通り11の登場人物を順番に提示してこの詩に馴染ませた上で、あとでこの本を見せるなら楽しめるかも。最初から見せるとわけがわからないと思う。絵はカラフルできれいです。

英語が分からなくても絵を見ているだけで楽しめる本です。カラフルで愛らしい絵は、すべての読者の心をひきつけてくれるはず。また、繰り返し同じ単語が出てくるので、子供のいい勉強にもなりました。
