Conceived on the principle that unlikable truths (about the 'hood, about racism, about machismo and desire) are more palatable when crooned than when shouted, angrily, by a black man brandishing a Gatt, TQ tries for much the same ground contested a few years earlier (and without success) by LV, another tender-but-tough set of initials, who lent his tremulous vocals to Warren G's classic "Regulate", only to subsequently sink without trace. No doubt about it, TQ has a fine set of pipes. But while that silky delivery might imply tenderness, there's nothing remotely soothing about these vignettes of life in the Compton projects: even "Westside"--probably this album's most engaging song, and certainly its most accomplished--contains enough in the way of chest-beating braggadocio and casual sexism to alienate a fair percentage of casual listeners, before ending with a reverent dedication to two dead MCs, Eazy E and Tupac Shakur. Call it the anxiety of influence, or the simple need to belong somewhere. --Andrew McGuire
