   スティーヴ・ハウ、カール・パーマー、ジェフ・ダウンズ、ジョン・ウェットンという、イギリスきってのロックミュージシャン達によって、81年に結成されたスーパーバンドである。
   85年には、ハウに代わりマンディ・メイヤーが加入するも、その活動は半ばにして自然消滅的に停止してしまう。が、90年に面目躍如たるヒットシングル<2>や<4>などに加え、新曲4タイトルを収録した本作で、復活を宣言。「それまで」と「これから」のバンドのあり方を示した作品となっている。（春野丸緒）

82~85年の3枚のアルバムからの既発表曲6曲と未発表曲4曲で構成された再編+来日記念の編集盤。新生エイジアの新ギタリストであるパット・ストロール参加以前の録音らしい未発表曲6~9にはスティーヴ・ルカサーやスコット・ゴーハムらがゲスト参加。

ＡＳＩＡを聴くなら、
ファースト・アルバム「エイジア~時へのロマン」
セカンド・アルバム「アルファ」
サード・アルバム「アストラ」
そして、この「ゼン・アンド・ナウ」である。

ジョン・ウェットンという最高のヴォーカル、そして、
メロディー・ラインの美しさを楽しむには、
まず、このアルバムから入るのが良し。

クリムゾン時代のジョン・ウェットンを御存知の方は、
あまりのポップさに、驚かれるだろうが、
ジョン・ウェットンがＡＳＩＡでやりたかったのは、
「３分間ポップス」である。

このアルバムを最後にジョン・ウェットンは脱退する。

ジョン・ウェットンなきＡＳＩＡは、ＡＳＩＡではない。

ASIAがASIAとして機能してなかった頃の未発表曲やアルバム収録漏れの曲が４曲も入っているので、これだけでも買いでしょう。
お気に入りは「SUMMER (CAN'T LAST TOO LONG)」ですが、S.ゴーハムのギターが冴え渡る名曲。
欲を言えば、このアルバムにDaylightやらのかつての未発表曲を入れてほしかったですね。収録されているヒット曲もミックス違いにするとか、再録音にするとか…。なによりもJohnが参加したASIAとしてのアルバムはこれが最後ですし、P.スロールがプレイするアルバムを出してほしかったですね。それにしてもこのアルバム、もっと評価されるべき！

アナログレコード時代に発売され、後にＣＤ化されたアルバムからベストな内容の作品を選ぶとして、
エイジアなら迷わずこのThen & Nowをおすすめします！！
この１枚で、世紀の大ヒット曲が４曲も楽しめます。
★ラジオスターの悲劇ロックバージョンHeat Of The Moment
★朝の最強目覚ましソングDon't Cry
★イントロのシンセがいかにも８０年代なOnly Time Will Tell
★REOスピードワゴン／涙のフィーリングになぜかそっくりThe Smile Has Left Your Eyes
とりあえず過去３枚のアルバムから６曲、このアルバムのみが４曲という変則ベスト盤ですね。
表ジャケットには、それぞれのアルバムを象徴する生物が描かれています。
裏ジャケットには、エイジアメンバー顔写真が載っていますが、
スティーヴ・ハウだけは外されています。
収録曲の大半はスティーヴ・ハウのギターだけど（Then）、これからは彼はいないよ（Now）
ということだったのでしょうね。
現在エイジアの企画ベストＣＤはたくさん出ていますが、名曲精鋭で楽しむならこのＣＤに限ります！！
個人的には、スティーヴ・ルカサーがギター参加のDays Like Theseが好きですね。
