This work is intended for children aged 9 and up. The secret lives and loves of cats are revealed in this adventurous novel that peeks into a year in the life of the mischievous feline Adrian Cat. Adrian is having trouble keeping his new year's resolutions (especially I will not be condescending to my humans), and he's also adjusting to the fact that his humans have a new baby, his best friend needs constant advice, and he's in love for the first time - with the angelic-seeming Snowball. When Snowball turns out to be less than perfect and tries to lead Adrian into organized crime, he refuses to follow her and instead joins up with a scruffy yet tender alley cat named Gypsy. After Snowball's gang runs Adrian out of town, he is forced to make some strange friends and travel a rough road in order to get home safely to his family and to his new love, Gypsy.

If you like cats you can't fail to love this endearing tale (pun intended). Adrian's adventures are hilarious - every day of his diary a joy to read. Here is his thoughts on how to enjoy life:
Ways To Ensure Nine Joyful Lives.
Be dignified - let dogs perform the tricks.
Sleep incessantly. It is the sole purpose of life.
Be prudent - never chase anything more than half your size.
Scratch wallpaper. It is one of the noblest pursuits.
Nurture patience - postpone all ambitions until your next life.
Chase string. It brings inner peace.
Be proud - you are a member of the family which includes lions, tigers and cheetahs.
Climb curtains. It takes you to a higher spiritual level.
Be inquisitive - discover a thousand places to sleep.

Adrian Mole, move over...share the stage with Adrian Cat!

This absolutely charming book is a parody on the Adrian Mole diaries by Sue Townsend, a series of books I have read several times and find delightful. The Secret Diary of Adrian Cat will join my "reread this over and over pile". It was funny, poignant, and soooooo spot on for the life of a cat. It starts with Adrian the Cat's New Year's Resolutions (just as the Secret Diaries of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 and 3/4 does) and catches your attention from the very first page. When I read the diary entry that he had slept a meager 21 hours today and thought he must be getting insomnia I was hooked! I have a cat with that exact kind of insomnia! I love the running gag that Trousers keeps sitting in the cat's new chair. It is a perfect way to show that if a cat can see it, it's his. Loved the introduction of the "human kitten" and the cat's lament at how long it took it to learn the most basic of functions like crawling!
However, you do not have to have read (or even heard of) the Adrian Mole diaries to enjoy this book. Without having read the Adrian Mole diaries, this book stands alone as a real tribute to our beloved cats and what they get up to all day when you're gone (wallpaper scratching and sleeping mostly). After reading the Mole diaries as well it is a double whammy of FUN!
While it seems to be rated as a children's book, it is suitable for anyone of any age. Go on. Read it. You know you want to!
However, you do not have to have read (or even heard of) the Adrian Mole diaries to enjoy this book. Without having read the Adrian Mole diaries, this book stands alone as a real tribute to our beloved cats and what they get up to all day when you're gone (wallpaper scratching and sleeping mostly). After reading the Mole diaries as well it is a double whammy of FUN!

365 days in the life of Adrian, cat. Literally. This is Adrian's diary, starting on January 1st. On which he resolves, among other things, to not be condescending toward his humans, to be more decisive about going in or out, and to promote world peace between cats, dogs, and mice. Adrian has great plans for the next year.
As is the case with most resolutions, Adrian's are sometimes abandoned. By January 2nd he has already decided that his humans, Skirt and Trouser, don't deserve the amount of respect he was considering giving them, and since the 6th is "Condescension Monday"... Some resolutions are reworked. When the neighbor humans get a dog, it becomes obvious that cats and dogs won't be getting along anytime soon, so Adrian limits his peacemaking efforts to cats and mice. It would be so much easier, though, if mice weren't so tasty!
There's much more to the life of Adrian Cat. Over the course of a year he falls in love, falls out of love, falls in love again, challenges the neighborhood bully cat, leads a rebellion, makes new friends, celebrates various cat holidays, and so much more. Adrian is a highly evolved and intelligent cat, if he does say so himself. And if you don't believe him, just read for yourself!
If you're a cat person, this is the book for you! And if you're not, you'll have a lot of hilarious fuel for your arguments. And just in case you were wondering -- yes, cats do know which humans don't like them. And they go for you on purpose.
