Book Description

From 1997-1999 Donovan Kelly wrote a column for the Washington Post called "Crummy But Good" in which he reviewed local eateries that looked dubious from the outside, but that offered something beyond the ordinary on the inside. His popular column, the ongoing radio series (WAMU-FM) and the never-ending suggestions from his legion of "crummy-but-good" scouts are brought together for this first compilation of reviews of the 50 best establishments meeting the highly technical crummy-but-good criteria. "Crummy" means a place that looks so bad from the outside that you would hesitate to take your mother inside, especially if she were wearing her good dress. "But Good" means that, once inside, you find some combination of a good menu, good food, relaxing atmosphere, friendly people, and reasonable prices that makes you want to come back. And maybe bring your smart aleck brother from New Jersey who thinks hes seen everything.

The restaurants are located in DC, and nearby and not so nearby Maryland and Virginia, and West Virginia. Included is a completely unbiased (?) list of the ten best places as well as a chronicle of the ongoing, ever-controversial Crummy but Good Crabcake War.

About the Author

Donovan Kelly is a free-lance writer who has written more than 70 restaurant reviews, life-style columns, and travel pieces for the Washington Post since 1996. He has also written for newspapers in Virginia and Pennsylvania and writes a regular column about a greenhorn country weekender for a weekly West Virginia newspaper. Following brief flings as a geologist, hydrologist and geophysical engineer, he has published poetry and fiction and taught courses in science writing. He retired from 30 years of writing science for the general public (senior public affairs officer, U.S. Geological Survey) in 1997. He lives in Hamilton, Virginia, but spends weekends at his mountain cabin in West Virginia splitting wood, writing and daydreaming.

Great Travel, Food Book 2002/10/29

Written by a restaurant expert, "Quest for the Holy Grill" is one of the funniest, most well-written travel guide/ restaurant review books I've read in a long time.

If you live in Maryland, Washington DC, or Virginia, you will find this book to be an invaluable tool to find great restaurants you may have overlooked in the past.

Not a place to take your mother 2010/2/18

This guide presents 50 places to eat within about 100 miles of Washington DC; so that limits the audience for the book; but if you live or visit this area get this book. It is a bit outdated, some restaurants have closed and need to join the `gone but not forgotten'. I wish there would be an updated copy, but until that time this is still a good resource if you love simple good food in comfortable surroundings instead of the same old chain restaurants. These are places with real food and people serving that fare to you. The addresses and phone numbers are given and a black and white drawing of that place is included. Each restaurant has a 1-2 page description of the food and the people and the restaurant itself.
If you are in the DC area this would be well included on your guidebook list.
Humorous and informative 2005/8/21

After having visited one of the establishments reviewed, I thought it would be interesting to read of all such eateries listed in the book. Crummy can also serve up wonderful meals. I enjoyed Donovan Kelly's writing style and humor along with the pertinent information.
